DETROIT - Curt Schilling felt so good yesterday after an 18-minute bullpen session that he felt confident that he could return before the All-Star break.
"I'm fine," Schilling said after his workout at Comerica Park. "I got to pitch. I'll throw a lengthy bullpen session (tomorrow) and go from there."
Schilling, who is recovering from a broken right hand, said the only discomfort he felt came when he gripped his curve.
Trainer Paul Lessard tempered some of Schilling's optimism, saying he wanted to see how Schilling recovered from yesterday's session and watch him throw tomorrow before projecting a return date.
The outlook also was encouraging for left-handed ace Randy Johnson, who threw well without any signs of discomfort in his right knee at the Fischer Sports Physical Therapy and Conditioning in Phoenix.
Assistant general manager Sandy Johnson observed Johnson's workout.
"It was a step in the right direction," Lessard said.
Arizona is six games over .500 for the year despite the fact that Johnson and Schilling have combined to go only 5-5 in 14 starts.
Monday for Mantei?
Closer Matt Mantei probably won't be activated until Monday's game in Colorado.
The Diamondbacks extended his pitch count last night for Triple-A Tucson at Las Vegas. Mantei threw 17 pitches, 13 for strikes, in the final two innings of Tucson's 5-2 win. He gave up two hits, struck out one, and didn't walk any.
His fastball was clocked as high as 98 mph in his one-inning stint Thursday.
Third baseman Shea Hillenbrand could rejoin the team as soon as today, although manager Bob Brenly doesn't want to rush him back from a left rib cage injury.
Hillenbrand, who has missed three weeks, reported no tightness or pain after his first rehab game Thursday.
Brenly said he wanted to get Hillenbrand more at-bats, although his ability to play first would give the team more options. The Diamondbacks may face left-handers Darren Oliver and Denny Stark in the four-game series at Colorado.
Craig Counsell's rehab assignment probably won't start until late next week because of tenderness in his surgically repaired right thumb and to allow him more time to strengthen his right shoulder.
D'backs leaving El Paso?
An investment group that recently acquired the rights to the Diamondbacks' Double-A El Paso franchise in 2005 is considering a move to Lubbock, Texas, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported.
