Former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Curt Schilling announced his retirement today. I know Curt loved the media attention and many disliked that, but the guy did help bring a World Series title to Arizona.

Many remember the games he pitched in the 2001 World Series, but I remember more his performance in games one and five of the 2001 NLDS against the Cardinals.

It was almost like I expected a win when Curt & Randy would pitch. That one-two combo in 2001 will go down as one of the best in major league history.

From Phoenix' own Shadow Mountain HS and eventually to the Orioles, Astros, Phillies, Diamondbacks and Red Sox.

Eleven winning seasons (including three 20-win seasons) in a twenty-one year career.

And a lot of publicity and internet participation. Curt did push his skills and personality to the limit. Not a great career and not a bad one. With a few moments of glory.

I would expect his career path to follow that other larger-than-life celebrity who graced the Valley, the Chuckster (hopefully not speeding to an oral experience).

Thanks for the good times, Curt.

The career of every out spoken sports star comes to an end sooner or later. His comments about the Red Sox championship ring versus the Diamondbacks ring never really sat well with me. However I do appreciate his stance on the steroid issue.

Regardless, he didn't exactly make any friends in the Phoenix area, or in the Diamondback organization after his departure.

If he makes the Hall of Fame, it'll be as a Red Sock or Philly, but to me he'll always be a Diamondback. I'll never forget "Johnson and Schilling and God willing." What a great season that was, and what an insanely amazing World Series.
