Championship!!!!
By Ed Price, Tribune
After hosting the American League champion — and possible World Series winning — Boston Red Sox for two exhibition games, the Diamondbacks will open the 2005 season April 4 against the Chicago Cubs.
The D-Backs released their schedule Tuesday and announced new games times. Most Monday-through-Saturday games will begin at 6:40 p.m., with Sunday games at 1:40 p.m. There are also some weekday 3:10 p.m. starts.
Arizona will face the AL Central in interleague play, with Detroit, Minnesota and Kansas City visiting Phoenix and games at Cleveland, Detroit and the Chicago White Sox.
The D-Backs are scheduled to finish the season away from home for the first time (they were supposed to wrap up the 2001 season at home, but the postponed games from the week of 9/11 meant finishing in Milwaukee).
Arizona is the first home opponent for the new Washington team — formerly the Montreal Expos — on April 15. That begins a rough stretch of 13 road games out of 16, with stops in Washington, Colorado, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.
The schedule includes another noteworthy trip: an August humidity tour to Florida, Atlanta, St. Louis and Cincinnati (12 games in 13 days).
The Boston Red Sox come to what is now known as Bank One Ballpark to wrap up spring training March 31 and April 1.
The team is taking deposits for full and partial season tickets; individual game tickets will go on sale in late February. For more information, call (602) 514-8400, or visits www.azdiamondbacks.com.
Ticket prices for 2005 are expected to be announced this week. Ticket prices went up 3.62 percent from 2003 to 2004, but as the team went 51-111, paid attendance fell to 2,519,560, lowest in team history and 13th out of the 30 major league teams.
