The Diamondbacks' unexpected pursuits of Tanaka and free-agent outfielders Shin-Soo Choo and Carlos Beltran this offseason stemmed in part from the clubs expectation that it soon would sign a new local television deal with FOX Sports.

The D-Backs still have not completed that deal, which would begin in 2016. But sources say that the contract will be worth at least $90 million per season over a period ranging from 15 to 20 years -- and that dollar figure could go even higher.

Comparing TV deals is tricky because of the different equity stakes that different clubs negotiate, but even at $90 million per season, the D-Backs' deal would represent an increase on the contract that triggered the current frenzy in 2010 the Rangers reported 20-year, $1.7 billion contract that is worth more than $80 million per year.

The only thing I could find about their current deal is that it is about half of that(in the forbes link below). Does this means that starting in 2016, the D-Backs will have about $40 or so million more to play with? If so, the Tanaka deal makes sense.

If the guesses on the current deal are correct, than yes - the new deal that kicks in in 2016 will double their TV revenues... Don't know if 100% of that will be put toward players...and who knows what GM and Manager will be here come 2016.
Should be interesting...

But we are already the second cheapest for average ticket and cheapest for Fan Cost Index, wich is the price of four adult average-price tickets, two small draft beers, four small soft drinks, four regular-size hot dogs, parking for one car, two game programs and two least expensive, adult-size adjustable caps.

^ Indeed, unfortunately Chase Field was WAY over built, capacity wise. It needs to be closer to 39K, not 49K. Even if the D'backs do ever reduce capacity (which has been discussed) they can't really decrease the building size or make it more intimate, its unfortunate. Chase Field just had bad timing, a lot of other retractable domes learned form the design mistakes at Chase...thats what happens when you're first I guess.

That's the big disparity in major league sports, pure and simple. Because of where ur team is situated, big advantages in bigger markets.

There needs to be hard caps in place. Make REAL penalties like loss of draft picks for teams exceeding thresholds.

Average fans have really been out priced more or less league wide. More moderate salaries are the other benefit of hard caps. The players union stops it, and it doesn't benefit the game or it's attendance.
