The third attempt was finally the charm. About three hours before the final negotiating window closed, the Diamondbacks and outfielder Shawn Green agreed in principle on a three-year, $30 million contract that includes a $10 million option for 2008.
That allows a much-discussed trade sending Green and $10 million from the Los Angeles Dodgers for catcher Dioner Navarro, minor league pitcher William Juarez and two lower-level minor league pitchers to finally be completed.

Diamondbacks managing partner Ken Kendrick confirmed the agreement Sunday night.

Sources said the new deal, which tears up the final year of Green's current $16 million contract, will pay Green $10.5 million in 2005, $8 million in 2006 and $9.5 million in 2007. The remaining $2 million is a signing bonus that will be deferred until 2008, a three-pronged option year in the deal.

If the Diamondbacks want to keep Green for a fourth season, he will make an additonal $10 million. If they don't, they have to pay him a $2 million buyout. If Green wants to move on, he can walk away without penalty.

Green will maintain a ''limited'' no-trade clause — he can exclude a short list of teams — and he will also maintain his bonus package from the existing 2005 Dodgers contract, which includes a $250,000 bump if he is named the National League's Most Valuable Player and $100,000 if he is named an All-Star, earns a Gold Glove award or wins the Silver Slugger award.

Kendrick also said the team is “hopeful'' that free agent pitcher Shawn Estes, who is expected to make his decison on a new team today, will stay close to his Paradise Valley home and sign with the Diamondbacks.

Estes would be the No. 4 starter, giving the D-Backs a rotation — one without Randy Johnson for the first time since their expansion season of 1998 — consisting of Javier Vazquez (if he stays), Russ Ortiz, Brandon Webb, Estes and a fifth starter emerging from a battle among Mike Gosling, Brad Halsey, Oscar Villarreal and Edgar Gonzalez.
