Just heard a story on the radio about why Randy Johnson will be traded, but what caught my ear was the D'backs total debt. They have total defered payment debt with interest at $300 million bucks and will be paid out over the next 5-7 years. Also there is some residual stadium debt that is estimated to be in excess of $200 million that has to repaid over the next decade. Putting their total debt at $500 million bucks.

How in the hell can they expect to put a team on the field when they are paying this?? What stadium debt to they have? I thought the gracious tax payers of Maricopa County took care of all that for them  Talk about piss poor management....

I guess put me in the minority but I will gladly have the DBacks suck for 5 years to get out of debt and have won a World Series.

I agree that the WS victory is something you can't put monitary value on, but in retrospect, they could have done it with out sacrificing the next 20 years or so

Speaking of debt, I read today on ESPN Insider that if the DBacks were to trade RJ this offseason, then the DBacks would pay Schilling more than any of their other pitchers next season thanks to deferred salary.

D-Backs' 2nd highest paid pitcher next season is ... Schilling?

Not only does Curt Schilling get a $2 million bump in salary next season because of the World Series win he also starts collecting some of the deferred money the Arizona Diamondbacks owe him. With a $13.5 million salary, $2 million jump in pay and approximately $6.5 million in deferred payment due next year, Schilling could make $22 million next season. If Randy Johnson is traded, then Schilling could be the highest-paid Diamondbacks pitcher in 2005.

I think part of the debt also includes the "entry fee" for the franchise to get into MLB. Also don't forget the d-backs were not eligible to receive any of the t.v. revenue for the first 3 years...what ever that figure was it certainly put us in the hole.

I am glad to have won the world series...but at this point I would be tickled pink to have a 0.500 club instead of what we went through last year.
