“I called Joe Sambito (Goldschmidt’s agent) and said we would have some interest in a long-term deal if he would,” Towers said. “He just said Goldy really appreciates it, but not at this point in time.”

Towers said Sambito told him that they wanted Goldschmidt to play out the year to “establish a little bit more who his real peer group is and where he belongs.”

Looks like an agent wants a big payday. I hope this does not turn out bad.

Curious what you think would be bad. Him blowing up with a huge year setting a high market price or him going in the tank?

Both options would be bad for the DBacks. If he has a great year he could price himself out of the Sbacks reach. If he has a bad year it would be bad for both parties.

When agents talks up the player, it over inflates what they think they deserve, they play out their controlled years and leave for a big market.

Pay him now, avoid having to pay him more later. Do what Tampa did with Longoria and Milwaukee with Braun.

Obviously, but there can be a middle ground the two sides can reach in what's considered reasonable per Goldschmidt's needs and what's above slot value for him at this stage in his career.

What makes you think that the team isn't willing to strike some middle-ground?

Yes, that is why he'll want to extend, if he does, after getting his stats up.

If you include arbitration eligible years the Dbacks control him for the next 5 years including this one..
