Persistence paid off for the Diamondbacks, who late Sunday convinced two-time All-Star right fielder Shawn Green to waive his no-trade clause and complete a trade with Los Angeles.
The trade, completed about four hours before the 1.a.m. deadline this morning, will send Green, 32, and $10 million to the Diamondbacks for minor league catcher Dioner Navarro and minor league pitchers William Juarez, Danny Muegge and Beltran Perez.
In order to complete the trade, Green and the Diamondbacks reworked the last year of his six-year, $84 million contract he signed before the 2000 season. His $16 million salary for 2005 was voided and replaced by a three-year deal that guarantees him at least $30million through 2007 and includes a no-trade clause.
The new contract calls for salaries of $10.5million, $8 million and $9.5 million, and a $2 million payment in 2008. The deal also includes a mutual option for $10.million in 2008.
Green would receive a $2 million buyout if the Diamondbacks don't pick up the option. Should the Diamondbacks want to pick up the option but Green opts for free agency, the Diamondbacks wouldn't have to pay the buyout.
All of Green's incentives from his previous contract will stay intact for the 2005 season.
Green is scheduled to take a physical examination today,4 with the expectation he will be introduced Tuesday at a news conference.
The completion of negotiations completes a wild series of developments that saw the Diamondbacks finally land Green in their third attempt and after they dealt five-time Cy Young Award winner Randy Johnson last week to the New York Yankees for pitcher Javier Vazquez, left-hander Brad Halsey, Navarro and $9 million.
"Our view is that we have traded Randy Johnson for Javier Vazquez, Shawn Green and Brad Halsey and $19 million," Diamondbacks General Partner Ken Kendrick said late Sunday.
"It's a good start, as tough as it is to see Randy Johnson leave."
Green, who will bat fifth behind Luis Gonzalez and Troy Glaus, is a career .314 hitter at Bank One Ballpark with 14 home runs.
Getting Green is just the start. Free-agent left-hander Shawn Estes is expected to agree to a one-year contract, with Oakland's Eric Byrnes4 looming as a candidate for center field and leadoff hitter.
Byrnes, 28, told a San Francisco Chronicle reporter Saturday that he was aware of the possibility he could be dealt.
Byrnes is playing for Licey of the Dominican Winter League.
The acquisition of Green means Shea Hillenbrand likely will be dealt, with Chad Tracy moving from third to first base. Hillenbrand is arbitration eligible and could earn up to $4 million.
