They exercised their option on him today, guess they feel good enough about his shoulder.

Assuming he's ready Opening Day, the D'Backs still need 2 SP's. How about Brad Penny & Jon Garland? Before the "are you nuts" comments start, Penny pitched well down the stretch for SF, BOS must really be tough place to pitch (see John Smoltz). Garland was decent for LA in his 2 months (2.72 ERA) and he can be had for less than the $10M he was going to get. Both guys are perfect for the 4 & 5 spots, they eat innings and can get you about 10 wins which is all we would need from them.

If we are really able to use them as 4 & 5 slot pitchers, I'm all for this... However, I can see us being in a position to move one of them into the #3 slot, which would be risky. I'm still not sold on Scherzer as a legit, fulltime starter. Unless he develops another pitch, I think he's going to continue to have problems betting past the 5th inning...

I would like to see the D-Backs go after a guy like Ben Sheets or Rich Harden. Someone who is an injury risk so they wouldn't cost as much as normal but could pay out huge dividends. In reality the D-Backs only need one more starting pitcher. It seems we are pretty content to use Buckner as our 5th starter. It has been said we will have about $15 million to spend on free agents this year. We probably need to get a first baseman who can backup Allen or start the year should Allen need more time in the minors. We also need to get some relievers. So say pay $6-$8 mil for a Penny/Harden/Sheets, I'd rather use the leftover money to shore up our bullpen than get a 5th starter. Should be an interesting off season.

Talks of a Chris Snyder for Lyle Overbay. This would be a decent deal especially if we don't have to send any money.

Id be very happy with that deal if it happened. His lefty bat and high OBP would fit nicely between Upton and Reynolds.

SS Drew L
LF Jackson R
RF Upton R
1B Overbay L
3B Reynolds R
C Montero L
CF Young R
2B Abreu S
P

Something like that could potentially be pretty good and have decent balance.

Para beats out Jackson IMHO.

How many light hitters have been put into the cleanup position on the D'backs and underachieved trying to be . . . clean up hitters?

OBP as a consideration for cleanup? It just doesn't work.

I still don't understand why Brandon Allen isn't given the same consideration. By the D'backs and with our ASFN posters.

A lefty power hitter and a very good fielder at 1B. At 6'2" 225 lbs., he did well as a middle of the lineup hitter before being brought up. Then he never saw a good pitch to hit at the bottom of the batting order.

I like Lyle Overbay. But he's a Mark Grace or Will Clark. Not a cleanup hitter.

Allen is gonna be the future but he just doesn't seem there now. He struggled in the fall league so he needs a huge spring to get the job. I think he is best served starting in AAA getting a ton of at bats then come up mid-season. So if we get Overbay we can use him for the first half of the year and then deal him for a prospect at the deadline.

Im fine w/ Reynolds hitting 4th, however the organization seems big on Left/Right balance, thus I was putting a Lefty between two righties.

I guess he fits into the D'Backs plan of renting a 1B for a year, he does get on base which is key and is 32 years old, and give the job to Brandon Allen in 2011. I would prefer Adam LaRoche but he is going to be offered arbitration so signing him would cost our 1st rounder as he would be an "A type" FA. I see Hank Blalock is also a FA but aside from his 32 HR three years ago he hasn't been that productive and his BA hasn't been anything to write home about, but he is only 27 and playing at Chase would probably increase his production. At least management is targeting help to improve the ball club.
