The Diamondbacks have narrowed their managerial search from eight candidates to three, Mark Grace said Thursday.
Grace, the team's broadcaster and former first baseman, said he was told Thursday he will not get the job and that Arizona has chosen three finalists.
Sources said in days after the first round of interviews that likely finalists included Manny Acta, who spent the past three seasons as the Montreal Expos’ third-base coach; Wally Backman, who managed the D-Backs’ Class A Lancaster team this year; and former Arizona bench coach and Seattle manager Bob Melvin.
General manager Joe Garagiola Jr., team president Rich Dozer, Melvin and Backman did not return phone calls Thursday.
The D-Backs also interviewed Texas Rangers first-base coach DeMarlo Hale; Anaheim Angels bench coach Joe Maddon; Al Pedrique, who managed the Diamondbacks the second half of this season; and Colorado Rockies bench coach Jamie Quirk.
Pedrique said Thursday afternoon he was still waiting to hear from the Diamondbacks.
Grace said he is considering coaching or managing in the minors next year — which would fill a hole in his resumé.
“Rich (Dozer) and I talked about that at length,” Grace said. “I have a plan and a vision. That's what I would love to do, coach or manage (in the majors). I did enjoy broadcasting.”
Grace, who retired a year ago after three seasons with Arizona and 16 in the majors, said he was not upset over not getting to manage the Diamondbacks.
“I'm fine with it,” he said. “I'm just thankful I got an opportunity to talk with them.”
