Per Realgm and Hoopshype

6 year deal

Also it is rumored that Portland will use the amnesty clause but will release Derek Anderson not Ratliff. He could be a cheap pick up for the Hawks if they don't want to tie up money with the offer to JJ.

Is the amnesty clause where you can get your highest payed player off the books, or am I completely missing it?

You can waive any player on your roster and not have that salary apply to the luxury tax but they still count against the salary cap.

I think any team has a one time option to dump/waive any player and their salary to advoid paying the luxury tax this year. I don't think it has to be the highest paid player.

The Dalembert signing by Philly makes me wonder if JJ has not already agreed (not just rumored) to sign an offer sheet with Atlanta. Thus, Phoenix will have to wait until Thursday or later to match the offer to JJ.

After seeing Dalmabert sign, I guess it is very obvious that the suns can not agree with JJ on a contract. I guess they still have a couple days to do that before the Atlanta deal shows up.

Here is an article that talks about the salary.

The 76ers have secured their center of the future.
Samuel Dalembert came to terms with the team on a new six-year contract late last night. Marc Cornstein, the agent for Dalembert, confirmed that it is a six-year deal, but would not give contract figures. The deal is believed to be for more than $50 million.

"The 76ers were very aggressive and made a concentrated effort to get this done," Cornstein said. "They were very proactive, and it shows how much they wanted to get this deal done."

NBA teams can't officially sign free agents until the moratorium is lifted on Thursday at 6 p.m. Under NBA rules, the Sixers are prohibited from commenting until the contract is signed.

The 6-foot-11 Dalembert, 24, was a restricted free agent, which means the Sixers had the right to match offers from other teams.

Sixers president and general manager Billy King did not want to risk getting into a bidding war with Atlanta - or any other NBA team. King had said since the start of negotiations that he would sign all three of his restricted free agents. He proved true to his word.

Swingman Kyle Korver and guard Willie Green also came to terms on six-year contracts recently; those deals totaled more than $44 million.

Dalembert averaged 8.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.68 blocks last season. He enjoyed a strong playoff series against the Detroit Pistons, averaging 11.6 points and 12.8 rebounds.

That is why I said earlier on this thread:

If JJ has already given Atlanta his word he would sign their offer sheet, then he probably would not want to renege on his word even if he wanted too.

That is not the same thing.
If he told Atlanta he would sign that agreement, it would have to be that it would be better than the suns would give him. If the suns made him as good an offer or better, he could sign with them and Atlanta would not have a problem with that.

I don't know Sunsfn. Maybe JJ and his agent had to give their word to Atlanta to sign their offer sheet (if they prepared an offer sheet and tied up their money).

In this scenario, everybody sweats.

If JJ's agent and Atlanta agreed in principle to sign an offer sheet....and the Suns told JJ's agent they would match (and were willing to sign)...JJ and the Suns could announce that the Suns have agreed in principle to match the deal (announced like the Dalembert, Korver, Green, Ray Allen, and Horry deals)...

...Atlanta would be thrilled not to have their money tied up for 7 days (so they could go after their plan B target). Of course, they would prefer the Suns not match the deal...but if the Suns do...Atlanta would prefer it be sooner than later.

The only reason the Suns haven't announced officially that they intend to match would be:

1. If the Suns in fact, are not prepared to match...or...

2. Waiting to see if there really is an Atlanta offer out there...or...

3. They simply want to make Atlanta wait the full 7 days as payback for giving the offer.

Just a thought, perhaps the Suns want to explore sign and trades during the 7 day matching period. This may or may not even involve JJ as I understand there may be a waiting period before JJ can be traded if the Suns match Atlanta's proposed offer sheet. I hate to even mention Marion's name after two years of trade rumors.

Could it also be that JJ and his agent may not really want to sign with Atlanta (or the Suns) and might participate in sign and trade scenarios with the Suns participation come Thursday without ever signing Atlanta's offer sheet? I wonder if this could advoid the waiting period involved (in matching Atlanta's offer sheet) and move JJ to a team of his choice.

I agree items 1-3 are all possible.

It's probably anybody's guess. However, I do believe the Suns do not want to lose a player of JJ's caliber without compensation.

I'm not sure how this works, since the Suns "unofficially" commented that they would match on JJ. But it certainly explains the deadening silence.

The suns could explore S&T possibilities before he signs the offer sheet, not afterwards. Once the offer sheet is signed, either the suns match it or let him walk for nothing.

Agreed, sorry if I was not clearer. I think the whole paragraph (and the rest of this particular post not included) clarifies it a bit more. I can understand if someone read it differently. :)

This waiting period before FA signings is driving me crazy.
Have the Martians landed yet and do they have a big man and PG we can sign.
