Mar. 14—Heading into the final race of the PIAA Class 2A Girls Swimming and Diving Championships, Dallas had already made it a great week with a handful of medals to its credit.
The Mountaineers had one final medal to go win, however — turning in a golden performance in the meet's final race.
The 400 free relay team of Maria-Lucia Priore, Audrey Haydu, Peyton Stauffer and Lydia Gonzales clocked in at 3:33.15 to win the gold medal, defeating Mount Pleasant by over a second.
Dallas built up a big lead through the first three legs of the race, giving Gonzales plenty of cushion as the anchor going up against Mount Pleasant's Lily King, an eight-time individual state champ looking to add one more to wrap up her decorated career.
King made it close, but Gonzales was able to close the door on Mount Pleasant and bring home a gold medal for the Mountaineers.
Mount Pleasant was still able to win the gold medal in the overall team standings, finishing with 189 points. Dallas won the team bronze, finishing behind Cathedral Prep in second place.
Stauffer, Priore and Gonzales were all point-scorers earlier in the day Thursday, with Stauffer finishing in ninth place in the 100 free and Priore placing 14th in the 100 back.
Gonzales won her second individual medal of the week with a fourth-place finish in the 500 free.
The silver medal in the 500 free was won by MMI Prep's Mary Kate Kupsky, turning in a 4:58.69 race to win her fourth straight state medal in the event. This year's silver marked the best finish of Kupsky's career at the state championships.
Tunkhannock swimmers and divers captured three more medals in the 2A boys competition, which wrapped up on Thursday night.
The highest finish came on the diving board, where River Strauss won a fifth-place medal for the Tigers.
After a disqualification in the 100 fly the day prior, Josh Gaudet rebounded nicely with a sixth-place finish in the 100 Free.
Teammate Kyle Kozloski added some points for the Tigers with a 10th place finish in the same race.
Tunkhannock finished the championships with an eighth-place finish in the 400 Free Relay, with Gaudet and Kozloski joined by Braydon Christopher and Andrew Lance.
The Tigers finished in fifth place overall in the team standings. The 2A boys team championship was won by Mount Pleasant.
Dallas diver Luke Karcutskie earned a point for Dallas in the team standings with a 12th-place finish in the diving championship.
Lake-Lehman had two swimmers competing on Thursday: Connor Runquist finished 21st in the 500 free and Kaleb Legaspi finished 29th in the 100 back prelims.
This year's PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships also featured two championship races in the new category of Para-Swimming, and the Wyoming Valley Conference had a strong showing there.
Pittston Area's Josiah Lyons and Holy Redeemer's Kacy Miller finished second and third, respectively, in both the Para-Swimming events: the 50 Free and the 100 Free.
In the 50 free, Pittston Area picked up two more medals with a fourth-place finish from Elijah Lyons and a fifth-place finish for Jaylan Moore.
Both Para-Swimming events were won by Freeport sophomore Isaac Barton.
