Doesn't sound like Sendek was able to close the deal. Let's see if Miller can.
http://tucsoncitizen.com/wildabouta...as-questions-about-asu-after-visit-by-sendek/

Phoenix North’s Daniel Bejarano knows a lot about ASU, which lost out to Texas for a verbal commitment from the shooting guard prospect last November.

But what he doesn’t know is how he would fit into ASU’s scheme if he signs with the Sun Devils as a Class of 2010 recruit. After welcoming ASU coach Herb Sendek and assistants Dedrique Taylor and Lamont Smith on Sunday afternoon for a three-hour in-home visit, Bejarano still has questions about the Sun Devils.

“We’ve done research on them, and we saw that I would be one of nine guards (including point guards) if I signed to play there,” Bejarano said. “(In the meeting) they told me they don’t look at positions, they look at having the best players on the court, like a post (player) plus four, but I don’t know yet how I would fit into that.”

The numbers game is what made Bejarano back off his commitment from Texas. He views a similar logjam with ASU, but he’s providing Sendek and Co. the opportunity to present their case. Bejarano said “it looks like” he will take an official visit to ASU the weekend of Oct. 16-17 after he visits Arizona this Wednesday and Thursday.

He at first said he would announce his decision next weekend after returning from Tucson.

“The ASU coaches want me to come out for an official visit and watch them workout,” Bejarano said. “I’m interested to see their style of play and how they work on that in their workouts by being there in person.

“There are two things I am looking at the most: Style of play and playing time. I want to go into a program and make an impact right away. I’m not one to mess around. I want to be a contributor from the start and I want to play at a fast tempo.”

Ray Arvizu Jr., Bejarano’s mentor, traveling coach and assistant at North, said the official visit to ASU is not certain at this time “because Daniel is already familiar with their program.” There is always the possibility that they will be impressed by the UA enough after the official visit this week that a decision could be forthcoming next weekend as was first planned.

Miller and his staff will have another in-home visit with Bejarano on Monday night. The visit is another get-to-know you meeting because Bejarano has never had contact with the UA coaching staff before last week. In Arizona’s favor over ASU is the element of something new and exciting, whereas Sendek and ASU have been down this road before.

“Today’s meeting with Coach Sendek was informational, with a lot of stats and a pretty straight-forward power-point presentation pointing out how they use their guards and all of that,” Arvizu said. “But I don’t think Daniel was moved by it. He didn’t come away from it saying, “Wow,” like he did after Coach Miller’s visit. That has a lot to do with him already knowing what to expect from ASU.” He knows what to expect as far as the same recruiting pitch ASU used before he committed to Texas nearly a year ago. But he still does not know how he would fit in with the Sun Devils.

“They told me before I committed to Texas that I could be the next James Harden,” Bejarano said. “I’ve read that they have told (Class of 2010 recruit) Keala King (a shooting guard who has committed to ASU) that he will be the next James Harden. I don’t want to be the next James Harden. I am Daniel Bejarano.

“I want to find what’s best for me to develop. I’m looking for the best type of system and a situation where I can come in and make a difference right away.”

Herb probably needs to get his stories straight. If he was recruiting Keala King to play the 1, then what position is he recruiting Gary Franklin to play? And everyone knows he doesn't play up-tempo basketball so that whole song and dance really needs to stop.

What on Earth are you talking about? Everyone knows Herb told King he could come in and play the James Harden role at ASU, not the 1. Harden played a 2/3 hybrid at ASU, and King will as well.

If DB came to ASU he'd play more of a traditional 2/Michael Redd/Peja type role for the Devils.

Finally if Herb a few years down the road had a lineup of N. Johnson-D Bejarano-K. King-V. Rudd-whoever at the 5, Id imagine he'd up the tempo a bit due to the increased athleticism. So far at ASU Sendek has had only 1 guy (Harden) who could potentially play that way, so he hasn't. Sendek (and most coaches) arent the totally rigid, unchanging nimrods you eternally make them out to be, Sendeks massive change in defensive philosophy should've shown you that.

^I dont have sour grapes at all. You're thread S-ing at this point though.

Mao said things that were flatly untrue, and Im explaining to him why theyre untrue. King WASNT recruited to play the 1, DB would play the 2 at ASU, and Sendek is willing to change his philosophies based on personnel. Those are called facts Im sorry if they annoy you.

He told Bej last night that he saw King at the 1 and Bej at the 2. Don't look at me, Herb is the one who said it.

On paper, yes. Depends if he beat out Lockett and King (who would struggle at the 1 and be forced back off the ball eventually). There's a logjam at ASU at the 2/3 because none of these guys (King, Bej, Lockett, Thompson, Hawkins, Walker) can play the 4 or 1 on a good team.

You need a point guard to force tempo and that lineup doesn't have one. And remember ASU was plenty athletic last year and so were his last several teams at NC State and the tempo always remained slow. And you're wrong, most coaches in fact are rigid egomaniacs who hate changing their style.

It makes no sense that Herb would tell King he'd be in the Harden role and then say he'd be a 1. So either DB misunderstood (which is partially Herbs fault for not explaining it properly) or the guy writing the article got it mixed up.

I would think it would help ASUs cause that KK and DB roomed together and at least know each other if aren't perhaps friendly. Hopefully for ASU KK is in DBs ear like crazy right now.

Nick Johnson is super athletic and if he can polish his PG skills up at Findlay could do it just fine.

And remember ASU was plenty athletic last year

ASU had rotation players in Derek Glasser, Rihards Kuksiks, Eric Boateng and Jerren Shipp none of whom Id describe as athletic. McMillan isn't great (but not poor) in that department either.

I just dont see Nick Johnson being a PG, especially in an up tempo system unless he progresses big time in the next 2 years. Its not a knock on him, but he would clearly be much better off at SG on the next level.

Not sure if that would happen. I actually wouldn't be shocked if KK de-commits from ASU if they land Bej as ASU would be forced to drop Franklin. Franklin/King are as close to a package deal as you can get at this point.

Not even close. Top 10 player Cory Joseph will play PG this year then Nigel Goss (considered to be the best player in the class of 2013) will start at point in Johnson's senior year. Johnson will be on the wing exclusively at Findlay.

ASU had rotation players in Derek Glasser, Rihards Kuksiks, Eric Boateng and Jerren Shipp none of whom Id describe as athletic. McMillan isn't great (but not poor) in that department either.
They also had two first round draft picks including the second best player in the entire country. ASU had more than enough not to take the air out of the ball.

ASU calm down. You can get all huffy about the reasoning and come up with a bunch of reasons of why things appear as they do but all I care about is Miller stepping up his game.

Even if DB ends up reversing course and going to ASU I am more impressed by the fact that after having no contact for 3 years Miller is able to swoop in and create such a favorable impression.

Compared to the tumult of 6 months ago the Wildcats are in a good spot with the right guy leading the charge. That I am positive.

Not to worry at this point, Rivals is reporting that ASU pulled the offer. Sounds like a case of being somebody being a sore loser to me.

Unlikely. Herbs a pretty classy guy and that would be out of his character. But he's only got one scholi left. I wonder if KK said "I really want Franklin" and if Franklin is ready to commit, then Herb will probably go in that direction.

Well, Bej is better than Franklin so that wouldn't make any sense. NOr would putting on the full court press for Bej yesterday then doing a 180 less than a day later.

It's become clear for the last couple days that Arizona is the overwhelming favorite so it's probably a face-saving move or he's pissed at Arvizu because there wasn't much of a chance Bej went to ASU after somebody bombed the in-home visit.

But you are right - I think Franklin does pull the trigger on ASU soon and ASU wraps up a good class.

^ I agree that DB is better than Franklin. Id take DB over Franklin myself as well. But if the situation was: definitely getting Franklin and King or maybe getting DB, the choice was easy to make.

Ill be happy if ASU gets Franklin though, a better shooting/more athletic version of J McMillan is A-OK by me. I was excited about ASU finally pulling a top flight Phoenix kid away from UA though, but ending up w/ King and Franklin doesn't exactly suck.

EDIT: VV I have no evidence of that, but its possible. It could be a lot of things and we'll never know for sure, so its just speculation. Franklin could be a lock and since chances were looking low on DB, why perhaps miss out on Franklin? Obviously King is an important get for ASU to keep building the program in the post Harden era so Herb probably wants to do all he can to keep him happy.

DOUBLE EDIT: Now ASU people (including their Scout guy who I wouldnt trust at all) are hinting that its a grades thing. Which of course is ******** since ASU and UA have near identical admissions standards.

But this is the same guy who reported (to people who pay him a lot of money) that after Koetter ASU would be hiring a 'trifecta' of Coaches that included Larry Marmie.

Are you insinuating that King was probably going to de-commit if ASU ended up with Bej?

If so, I'm guessing UofA would've ended up with both of them. Now it's time to see hwo got the better end of the deal. Remember a lot of ASU fans were crowing about Gerrell Robinson and Ryan Bass not too long ago and after all of that UofA ended up with better players with their Plan B's. I'm guessing one fan base will re-visit this recruitment a lot over the next few years.

GoAzCats.com is reporting that ASU has pulled their offer to Daniel Bejarano. This basically means he will become a Wildcat, as far as I know (which isn't that much, to be honest). But if it's true, welcome Daniel!

It seems to me that King may have had something to say about this whole thing playing out. It sure sounded like King and Frankling were a package deal to ASU and im sure neither woul dhave been happy if Bejarano took the last scholarship, not to mention all those guards Sendek just brought in.

Just rumors, but it does make sense as a reason why ASU pulled the offer. Like Mao im guessing Frankling seals the deal soon and ASU's class is complete, which would be somewhat telling.

Well, the ASU spin machine will tell you it's grades or something else nonsensical. Leaking that story probably wasn't the best idea for getting local kids, see Mike Stoops "junior college" comment from a couple years ago.

So Sendek used the same (failed) recruiting pitch as last time? That's half-hearted.

Sendek couldnt hire Bej's high school coach as an assistant; therefore, he couldn't seal the deal

Just saw on azcentral.com. NICE!!!

Here's hoping Miller can coach as well as he can recruit. Because I would buy ocean front property in Arizona from this guy

FWIW that's what Greg Hicks of Scout hsa been saying on Johnson for awhile now. He says UCLA is still recruiting Johnson but they also do not believe he's a PG they think he's a combo guard.

Greg personally says he doesn't think Johnson is a PG period, lacks the PG instincts. I
