Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is regarded as one of the best to play the position, but it wasn't obvious going into the 2017 NFL Draft. NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah appeared as a guest on the 'Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams' to share his admitted evaluation miss on the former Texas Tech standout eight years ago.
"Patrick Mahomes is about as bad as it gets. He was a legit boom or bust," said Jeremiah. "That was the greatest imagination of what the boom could look like. He's like ten levels above that. I really do look at that stuff as opportunities to, like, what can you learn, and take that lesson that you learned onto the next."
The Chiefs famously traded up to select Mahomes, who would begin his career as a backup behind Pro Bowler Alex Smith. Jeremiah believed that Mahomes would've still been effective if taken by another team and figured things out.
"I think he would have eventually figured it out no matter where he would have gone, and it would have taken teams a while to put all the necessary pieces around him," said Jeremiah. "but maybe wouldn't have had the level of team success he's had cause you are still dependent at that position with the other things in place, but he would have been really good."
The two-time league MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion has performed well in his career since the 2017 NFL Draft. His unique ability has changed how quarterbacks are evaluated moving forward.
