There has been reports floating around Lexington that coach will be named the new UK coach shortly, probably after UK gets knocked out of the NCAA Tournament. Has anyone heard about this?

Tubby Smith will probably get fired at some point soon, but a program of that caliber won't target a guy who has never coached or recruited college players. Please delete.

IF, and that's a big IF, D'Antoni is going to become the UK new head coach, it WON'T be Mike D'Antoni, it will be Barbosa's mentor Dan D'Antoni. Even then, I dunno if he would leave the Suns coaching staff.

We really should begin a thread listing the dumbest rumors and then vote on it at some point. This would a wonderful start.

You know, I think Kentucky could hire our GM, but I'll keep the coach.

Believe it or not, this 'rumor' has been getting airplay in Lexington. My local source says it is more of a tack on to the 'becoming ever more likely' rumor of Tubby Smith getting axed. Some local sports heads like Ramb...excuse me GAMBO and his bud were speculating and basically making a wish list.

It is a very prestigious job...and instant royalty status in a very wealthy kingdom. Didn't Pitino run from the knicks to 'my ol kentucky home' ?

I don't think Coach D is after 'instant prestige.' He's got it made here and is getting to call all his own shots and change the way the game is being played, without having to suck up to a bunch of university admins and alums. (Just Mr. Sarver, and I get the feeling D'Antoni has that pretty much nailed down.)

Now when Steve Nash is through playing, that might be different, although I doubt it even then.

I used to live in Louisville and know firsthand how good he would be at UK. And his style of play is tailor made for that fanbase.

And personally, I am starting to believe that his rotation patterns and style of play might not be condusive in the framework of an 82 game (hopefully 98 game) season. His rotations in college with shorter games and seasons would work out much better.

Would you replace him with Iavaroni (sic) or go outside the organization for his replacement?

In all honesty, as prestigious as the Kentucky job may be, I can't see him leaving the Suns for it. I actually see either Chris Lowery (Southern Illinois coach), Todd Lickliter (Butler coach) or Mark Fox (Nevada coach) taking the job.

If D'Antoni actually left, I would definitely promote Iavaroni. It's only a matter of time before he lands a head coaching job anyway. He knows the Suns system very well, which would provide for a seamless transition (he even played alongside D'Antoni in Italy). Plus, he was an assistant to Pat Riley in Miami and Mike Fratello in Cleveland--hard to find better mentorship than that. He's got a ring and has been a college coach.

Iavaroni is one of the keys to the Suns' success of late and he deserves to be a head coach.

Does anyone think after the Denver debacle that D'Antoni would leave probably the only shot he'll ever have at an NBA title for a college job that comes with 10 times more daily pressure? I can't fathom it. It's just not rational.

I think Kentucky basketball is = Alabama football. They can't imagine any coach at any level not dreaming of that job, and they throw out names like if they offered, that coach would drop everything and come running.

A couple of days ago I heard one of the ESPN guys, not sure which, say that Ivaroni was the leading candidate to take over Memphis once the ownership transfer takes place.

Well said. The only difference would be that D'Antoni wouldn't have to worry the luxury tax and max contracts at Kentucky. Kentucky pays whatever it takes.

That wouldn't shock me in the least.. I've pretty much grown to the fact that he's leaving, and I've often thought out loud that he'd either wind up in Philadelphia or Memphis anyhow. I thought for certain he'd go to Toronto if the Raptors crapped themselves again, but now the Raptors are playing fairly well and Mitchell temporarily saved his job.
