Daryl Washington breaks his silence about his future

The last time linebacker Daryl Washington played in an NFL game was December of 2013. He hasn’t spoken publicly about his long absence but recently ended his silence. I spoke with Washington on Friday about his current suspension, and he claims he'll apply for reinstatement when the new league calendar begins in March.

Washington said, "I'm optimistic moving forward when it comes to being reinstated in 2017." His latest claim is that he hasn't missed or failed any drug tests. In fact, he was tested last Friday and had a three-hour window to submit his test. He was also tested on New Year's Eve and randomly tested about seven to 10 times per month.

He still needs to be suspended for the baby mama incident.

I dont see him staying clean, partially because he is secretive. Havent heard from this dude in almost 4 years. When Tyrann was having his drug issues, he was out in front of the camera on ESPN everyday talking about how hes turning his life around.

DWash gets busted the 1st time, says sorry, gets busted the 2nd time, gets suspended, and subsequently continues getting busted (altho not publicly announced) in 2014 and 2015. I think a big part of staying clean is being public about it. Thats a big part of AA, because when youre home by yourself, thats when you get urges. But if you have a physical support group who holds you accountable, that makes for better chances.

Funny thing is, if he does get unsuspended, some team 100% will sign him.

I don't want to give this guy the benefit of the doubt because he frankly doesn't deserve it. Saying that, everyone handles their own problems differently. He doesn't necessarily need to be public about his problem. Maybe he does have a support group helping him. (not optimistic) I also want to mention that a big part of AA is the religious aspect with frankly turns some people off. AA (and programs like it) isn't the only method of beating addiction.

Funny thing is, if he does get unsuspended, some team 100% will sign him.

He is still a member of the Cards, so he has to actually be cut first. The Cards have had 3 years at least to cut him and they haven't. That says something. Just not exactly sure what.

Man he's 30 already! I'm still on the side of giving him a chance IF he is reinstated. I'm pretty certain that he will have to go above and beyond to get that chance with our front office. So if he is mentally and physically ready I think it's worth a shot.

even if missing 4 games, if he shows in camp he can still play he could at least be a backup ILB.

And for the billionth time:

"Washington has been on the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended list, and his base salary doesn't count against the salary cap."

His base salary was never the issue. You can cut guys at any time, no matter their base salary.

Its the guaranteed money that hurts. If you sign a guy, give him $30M guaranteed, then cut him the next year, then you just paid the man $30M for 1 years work.

The Cardinals and fans like myself have no reason to believe him, especially when all actions, and actions of the NFLPA say otherwise.

In my opinion, if he is re-instated he will be cut by the Cardinals. Not to mention he still has not been disciplined for his domestic assault by the NFL.

The good thing about what he is claiming is that it should be verifiable pretty easily.

Biggest hole in his story is why the NFLPA was dead silent about his situation, while many situations that at least seemed like they were similar, the NFLPA commented on.

Guess we will see in March.

But, he is a liar and a cheat, at least by my standards. That he has already proved by getting suspended after his contract extension.

The timing of the suspension was annoying, but to me the reason he'll never get straight is because of the repeat failures during suspension.

Like Tyrann said after he got kicked off of LSU, that was rock bottom and he changed.

DWash got suspended, which shouldve been rock bottom, but evidently in 2014 and 2015 he continued his drug use. Thats somebody who cant be helped.

Let me translate. "My agent says I need to play next year in order to get another signing bonus before I can go back to being a full time drug addict", DWash.

such a shame....coulda been him all these years instead of Minter.

or Dansby.

Damnit.

Rod Graves......SMH.

Karlos Dansby ? Ugh. We have let him go twice and have failed both times to replace him with anything that resembled an ILB. Another player that we let go to "save money" only to piss away the money saved on players like Daryn Colledge and Adam Snyder and to re-sign players like Levi Brown, and recently to invest in a player like D-Waste.

It is completely hindsight being 20-20, but if the Cardinals just kept Dansby he would be still starting for us.

To a lesser extent I could put Anquan Boldin in this category, too, but letting Dansby go has always been a head scratch for me.

Has there ever been a situation where an elite athlete has been out of football for three years and has come back and been anywhere close to what he was when he left? Even if he has put the drug problem behind him, which is a huge if, would he be anywhere close to the player he used to be? The 2013 season was a long time ago.
