Looks like George now knows how Jerry felt a few years ago.

David Wells - S - New York Yankees
Dec 31
According to the New York Post, David Wells has decided to turn his back on the Yankees and sign a one-year deal with the Padres.
It appeared that the Yankees and Wells had pretty much agreed to a deal three weeks ago, but this isn't the first time the left-hander has changed his mind at the last minute. He had a verbal agreement with Arizona before returning to the Yankees two years ago. Wells' decision leaves the Yankees with Jon Lieber as their fifth starter. That's not such a bad situation, but expect George Steinbrenner to look for alternatives. A run at Greg Maddux can't be ruled out, but a more likely option is that they'll try to bring back Orlando Hernandez. They'll also likely enter the bidding for Cuban defector Maels Rodriguez

Is it official yet? I could see him turning right around and going back to NY screwing the Padres.

It's official:

Padres signed LHP David Wells, who had been with the Yankees, to a one-year, $1.25 million contract. Wells could make up to $7 million through incentives. He's expected to start on Opening Day for the Padres if he's recovered from back surgery. Brian Lawrence, Jake Peavy, Adam Eaton and either Ismael Valdes or Sterling Hitchcock will make up the rest of the San Diego rotation. The Yankees will get a supplemental first-round pick and the first selection in the second round for losing Wells, so they shouldn't be too disappointed.

Is it me or are the Padres loading up on some guys lately?
