The New Orleans Saints defensive interior was a weakness of the team last year, so it is not shocking that it was one of the first things they addressed this offseason. Rather than scouring the market in free agency, the worked out a trade with the New England Patriots of defensive lineman Davon Godchaux. He is a Plaquemine, La. native that played his college ball with the LSU Tigers. He will be returning home for his ninth NFL season.

While he hasn't been a Pro Bowl player on the inside, he has been a consistently solid presence and has been one of the more reliable players at the position. He has started all 17 games for the last three years and played in all games for six of his eight seasons.

After acquiring Godchaux in this trade, the Saints restructured his contract to further lower his salary cap hit for 2025. This is how much the veteran tackle will make this season, according to the experts with OverTheCap:

Davon Godchaux 2025-2026 salary

This was the first year of a two-year, $18 million extension that he signed with the Patriots back before the 2024 campaign, at least before it was restructured.

Godchaux's base salary this year would have been $4,000,000. He would also have received a total of $850,000 in per game roster bonuses if he lasts the entire season, which is likely. That equates to $50,000 per game. He also had a workout bonus of $150,000 for attending the offseason team activities. That all amounted to a $5 million cap hit.

After restructuring his deal, Godchaux's 2025 base salary fell to the minimum at $1,255,000 and his workout bonus was reduced to $50,000. The difference is being paid out as a signing bonus with four void years added to his contract, which means yearly proration of $639,000. So his cap hit this year is now just $1,944,000. Next year's cap h it is $7,139,000 and if his deal voids as written in 2027, he'll leave behind $1,917,000 in dead money. But we'll have to wait and see what the Saints plan for him and whether he gets a new deal in the next year or two.
