Dawn of the Dead - the first ten minutes...

USA to Debut First 10 Minutes of Dawn of the Dead
Source: Universal Pictures
Friday, March 5, 2004

On Monday, March 15th, in a first-ever motion picture and television event, USA will debut-in its complete, uncut entirety-the intense opening 10-minute sequence from Universal Pictures' upcoming zombie horror film Dawn of the Dead. The heart-pounding footage, which immerses viewers nearly immediately into a surreal, terrifying world under siege by zombies, will be shown between 10:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., near the end of USA's telecast of Final Destination, which begins at 8:00 p.m. Eastern/Pacific (check local listings) on Monday, March 15.

This first-time-ever telecast will allow viewers to watch a full, uncut sequence from the film five days before it hits theaters. USA Networks and Universal Pictures strongly caution that the footage contains graphic violence and language consistent with the film's R rating and recommend that viewers exercise discretion before tuning in.

"'Dawn of the Dead' is so good it's combustible," commented Adam Fogelson, president of marketing for Universal Pictures. "It gets your adrenaline going and keeps it there. You'll scream, laugh, hide your eyes and cheer. We wanted to find a way to give people a real taste of that before the film comes out. Showing the first 10 minutes of 'Dawn of the Dead' unedited, exactly as it exists in the movie, speaks for itself. This material is intended for mature audiences, so the responsible place to air it is after 10 p.m. on USA, a cable network, with plenty of warning about its content."

"This unprecedented telecast is exactly the kind of creative collaboration we love to offer our partners," said Michele Ganeless, executive vice president and general manager of USA Network. "It's a promotional win/win for everybody -- USA gets unique content while Universal gains tremendous exposure for its film."

Dawn of the Dead opens nationwide in theaters on Friday, March 19, 2004. The film has received an MPAA rating of R for pervasive strong horror violence and gore, language and sexuality.

Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber and Mekhi Phifer head an ensemble cast in a re-envisioning of George Romero's apocalyptic horror classic. An unexplained plague has decimated the world's population and yet ... the dead aren't dying. They've become zombies, stalking endlessly in a constant quest to feed on the flesh and blood of the few remaining living.

A ragtag group of desperate survivors in a Wisconsin town seek refuge in a large indoor mall, where they must learn not only to protect themselves from the ever-increasing zombie horde, but also to co-exist with each other as a last bastion of humanity. Sealed off from the rest of what used to be the world, the group uses every available resource (both within and without) in their against-all-odds fight to remain alive and human.

Thast pretty cool. I want to see the movie so I wont tune into it. I already know I have the interest and there is no point in seeing it twice.

But a good idea none the less for the possible viewers who are on the fence.

Went and saw a sneak preview of this last night.

Good movie. Not a great movie, and nowhere near as good as the original but a pretty good horror flick nonetheless.

The plot of this movie differs greatly from the original. In this one, the world is taken over by zombies and a handful of humans hole up in a shopping mall. After this, they try and cope with life besieged by the undead and then eventually trying to figure out if they can escape to someplace where the dead haven't taken control.

The action is pretty cool, but not nearly as gruesome as in the original. That's not to say that this comes close to PG-13 level. Zombies are offed left and right via gruesome head wounds. Within the first fifteen minutes we see a large number of humans being eaten alive by zombies although like I said, they don't go to nearly the levels that the original did.

The only thing that kept me from completely enjoying the movie were a few moments of complete stupidity by characters in the movie. Some of the scenes that were meant to be suspenseful had the test audience laughing. The logic of the humans while trapped near a gas pump will have you scratching your head. Several other things, too, but I'll wait till more people see this to start naming them.

Unfortunately, while the movie has a pretty cool ending they should have quit once the credits roll. The end credits come with completely redundant, unnecessary footage that kills a lot of the mood the movie had built up to this point. It's a shame, cause it was a pretty good movie up till that point.

I really wish they would have not used the title Dawn of the Dead and just gone in a new direction. The zombies in here are fast, strong, and relentless. I'd still like to see a new franchise started with better movies to follow, so long as they don't call the next one Day of the Dead. Putting the title of the original makes me miss the original, which had better characterization, gore, and actually made a social commentary. As it is, this is a pretty good movie that pales in comparison to the original.

Isn't that basically the same plot as the original? It's been awhile since I last saw it.

Up till the whole "barricading themselves in the mall" it is. After that, each movie goes in a different direction with how the survivors handle their situation.

Saw it yesterday. Very good survival horror movie, IMO maybe top 2 all time (maybe behind the original Night of the Living Dead). :D

Care to explain why? I generally like your takes on movies, though it isn't gospel. :D

I haven't seen it, but saying it's one of the top 2 survival horror movies ever is a pretty heavy statement. :p

I actually do want to see it and see if you are correct. :D

Well IMO, the competition is pretty weak. Most zombie movies are pretty bad. The worst ever? Italian film, City of the Dead. :p

The gore wasn't too much IMO, it was appropriate for a zombie movie. I also liked how the zombies move more like living humans. And there are so things that happen that are just WRONG!

*AHEM*!!!

One of the 2 best survival horror movies ever? I gotta disagree. For me this wasn't even one of the two best in the series.

That's not saying I hated it, it just was a very glitzy and rushed version of the classic original. One of my favorite parts in the original is how the SWAT members figure out the best way to fortify the mall. In this one all we get is Mekhi Phifer yelling "Yeah, that glass is shatterproof, bitch!" as our way of knowing that the dead can't get in. That example sums up how the movie holds up for me.

There're plenty of better survival horror movies than just zombie movies. Check out Dog Soldiers for a cool little "besieged by werewolves" turn.

Well admittedly I more of a fan that doesn't really hold horror as a hobby anymore. When I was 9 or 10, I would rent a horror movie or two every weekend, so I've seen a lot of horror movies.

And *quickly ducks* I haven't seen the original, so I can't judge this one from knowledge of the first one.

Do yourself a favor and check it out on DVD. It's gorier than the remake, too.

Well, you've brought your wrath down on me before, and I've learned that there is nothing to worry about. You're as tame as a kitten. :p

I'm going to buy Spun. I'm absolutely terrible at returning movies on time so I've figured that I would be much smarter to just buy any movie that sounds even remotely interesting.
