Gregory-Portland ISD opened it's brand new ballpark in style on Tuesday.

The G-P baseball team overcame an early deficit and then starter Blaine Elizalde put it in cruise control as the team opened Wildcat Park with an impressive 7-1 win against Ray.

Elizalde threw the first pitch in the park over for a strike and even though the Texans scratched a run across in the top half of the first inning, the Wildcats answered with two in the bottom of the frame on a liner from Reed Dooms and never trailed afterward.

Jaymen Galvan recorded the first G-P hit in Wildcat Park and Elizalde earned the win with 5 ⅔ innings of three-hit one run ball, striking out six in the process.

Galvan, Austin Vasquez and Dominic Guerra all had multi-hit games for G-P, which improved to 9-8 and 5-1 in District 29-5A.

"The kids handled everything with the new park well," Gregory-Portland coach Ronnie Jonse said. "I thought all three phases were good tonight. This was probably the first time all year that all three phases came together and it is magic when it happens."

The victory pushed G-P into a tie with Veterans Memorial atop the district standings. The Eagles handed the Wildcats their lone district loss and own the tiebreaker with 10 games left in district play.
