In an effort to continue to bolster their bullpen, the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday announced they have claimed left-handed pitcher Wilfredo Ledezma from the San Diego Padres.
Ledezma will report to the D-backs tomorrow, at which time another corresponding move will be made.
With an 0-2 record and a 4.47 ERA (27 ER in 54.1 IP) over 25 games (six starts) with the Padres this season, Ledezma has struck out 49 batters and walked 38.
Ledezma is 15-22 with a 5.16 ERA (207 ER in 361.0 IP) in 152 career games (40 starts) in parts of six Major League seasons. He has walked 176 career batters and struck out 243.
Ledezma made his Major League debut in 2003 with Detroit, playing with the Tigers until last season, when he was traded to Atlanta and then later to San Diego.
A left-hander, that's rare. The Venezuelan waiver claim is pretty mediocre. This season, in 54 1/3 innings, 49K's, 49 hits, 38 walks, 4.47 ERA, 5.16 career ERA, he can make spot starts, but hopefully, he won't ever have to.
His ERA in six starts is 6.57. In relief, it's 2.73. Against lefthanded hitters, his ERA is 4.05. He still walks way too many batters. Since being called back to the big leagues in mid-July, his ERA is 1.86 over almost ten innings on a crappy Padres team. Josh Byrnes did his homework with the waiver wire, I guess. Overall, he's really no better or no worse than anyone they have now, so plucking him for the stretch drive shouldn't hurt, but it's the unpredictable D-backs 'pen, we're talking about. He the only lefthanded reliever on the roster and is #46 in your scorebook.
