Janie McCauley, of the Associated Press, reports the San Francisco Giants designated RP Matt Herges for assignment Sunday, May 29. The team has 10 days to trade or release him. A roster move had to be made following the team's acquisition of RP LaTroy Hawkins, and Herges was one of several candidates but became the odd man out. "It was one of the toughest (decisions)," said Giants assistant general manager Ned Colletti. "He's a man of great heart, soul and integrity." Overall, Herges was 1-1 with a 4.71 ERA in 21 appearances.
KLL said:I'm not suggesting that the Dbacks obviously trade anything for him (nor of course would the Giants be inclined to help out a inner-division rival), but Herges has had some decent years in the past and was simply a victim of a "numbers game" this year..... Certainly would be better than Ligtenberg, Bruney, and to a lesser extent Koplove....
