If the Dbacks only make a move in one position, which one?

I think we need a legitimate 1B.

I think Reynolds' can hold down 3rd, but we can't have .220 hitting from the 1st base spot and expect to compete. Especially since we don't have spectacular numbers from anywhere else in the infield.

I think our bullpen could benefit from a Jarrod Parker call up to limit his innings.

1. Kennedy
2. Hudson
3. Collmenter
4. Saunders
5. Owings

Long Relief- Zach Duke
Lefty Specialist- Joe Patterson
Demel
Shaw
Castillo
Parker
Setup- Hernandez
Closer- Putz

We have 4 legitimate starters, we and with Owings bat, I think he can justify the 5th spot if he can stay in games longer than 4 innings.

It really depends on how good the player is. Another 4-5 type pitcher won't help all that much IMO but a legit 1 or 2 starter could get us past the Giants.

The stark reality is that this team will only go as far as Upton can take them - and that's hoping that our starters (Kennedy, Hudson, Saunders and Collmenter) somehow continue to produce quality start after quality start...

We just don't have any other dependable offensive threat (Miggy is close, however, as a catcher, he will not be playing as much as Upton and, you have to assume that he will wear down at some point).
Parra continues to show flashes. Willie B also proves he's a capable hitter. Roberts is at best inconsistent (but still a terrific utility guy).
We have a void at First Base, plain and simple... If we had a guy who can play just adequate defense, but at minimum hit .265/.270 with 20-25 home runs and drive in 85-95 runs, our offense would be dramatically improved and would take so much of the pressure of our pitching...

Can Carlos Beltran play first? ;)

Not a bad thought Jon... He would of course be a VERY expensive addition...think he's making $20 million this season so we'd eat a fair amount of that.
And then what about next season? He'd have to agree to a reasonable deal going forward. He's on the downside of his career and has shown to be quite injury-prone since his last great season in 2008. He's playing well this season - however, word out of NY is that he's playing thru injury as he knows he needs to produce in order to secure a solid deal for the balance of his career. So - he's actually damaged goods right now...

Still, if he would accept a reasonable deal, I'd take a shot on him as, even though his best years are behind him, he's significantly better than anything we've got...

Who are you thinking of?

Nobody in particular but something like the Cliff Lee acquisition last year would make the Dbacks contenders. Of course I haven't heard about anybody of that caliber on the block.

Wandy Rodriguez has 2 years and $23M left on his deal, Houston's going to have to kick in some dough if they want somebody to bite.

I heard a GM once say that the only reason you develop prospects is to have parts to deal for vets that can actually help you contend. Its real easy to get enamored with the young talent but if you can use some of it to get the pieces you need to make a run....

I think the Dbacks should roll the dice. Go big or go home!

I don't see the benefit of trading away prospects to rent players in a season when it would require at least three substantial acquisitions to say you'd have a shot at beating the Phillies. If you can get a Wandy Rodriguez for basically the cost of taking on his contract, you can live with that. If you can get a reliever without touching your top 10 prospects, I think that's smart.

I don't like hording prospects when it hurts a contending team, but IMO, you only make expensive trades if it returns you something that provides a reasonable shot at getting to the World Series. Sorry, but this team is decent but a far cry from contending with the Phils.

Also, no way you try to acquire an everyday player right before the trade deadline unless a team is giving him away and he's under contract for a few years. I mentioned Konerko, but only because his production has exceeded his paycheck and the White Sox seem like they could implode. But Beltran comes with a huge tab and you're not even certain he can play the position you need filled the most.

Sorry, I was talking with a co-worker about reynolds all morning.
What what you saying about him. I saw that his stats are about the same as when he was here, but not quite so obscene.

His career has even fallen short of Dave "King Kong" Kingman.

Guy is an Orioles fan.

We thought it was ironic that our teams haven't changed personnel drastically from last season, outside of the Reynolds for Hernandez swap, and they went from a hot finish last year after the signing of Buck Showalter, to last place in the East while we went from last place in the West to competing for a playoff spot.

Only conclusion we could come to is that Reynolds' .220 BA isn't worth how many rallys he kills, or the confidence he gives to opposing pitchers.

The term "cancer" was dropped, and I am a Reynolds fan.

Anyone think the D-Backs could get Michael Cuddyer from the Twins without giving up something too expensive?

Free Agent after this year...

I know. That's why I'm thinking he could come cheap as a rental player. Or maybe he's someone the D-Backs would actually like to sign. He's playing 1B but can play a lot of positions, but his bat is solid.

That is a plus, as far as trading availability and cost. Twins will lose him anyways, or can re-sign, just like if he was on the team still.
