[font=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]Looking to improve at catcher, the Diamondbacks this week made contact with the representative for free agent Brad Ausmus.

A two-time Gold Glove winner, Ausmus, who spent the past five seasons in Houston, has long been regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in baseball.

"The Diamondbacks have expressed interest in Brad," said Peter Mrowka, Ausmus' agent. "We had a lengthy conversation and planned to talk again soon."

[font=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]Ausmus, 36, hit .258 with three homers and 47 RBIs last season as he completed a two-year, $4 million contract. He could command more this winter.

Ausmus has played for Houston, San Diego and Detroit, where he was in 2000, when Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin was bench coach for the Tigers.

Houston is interested in bringing Ausmus back, as is San Diego, where he resides in the off-season.

Ausmus told the Houston Chronicle this week that Houston and San Diego are "my two favorites, no question." He added that he was "going to listen to everything."

Meanwhile, pitcher Javier Vazquez, who has filed a trade request, said he will play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.

Vazquez also said he doesn't want to be traded back to the New York Yankees.

"I don't want to return to the Yankees because I don't like the way they dealt with me," he said in San Juan.

[font=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]I dont know about this. He's more than likely gonna be more expensive than 2 mill a year and hes getting old. He's solid behind the plate but very average with the bat. I think we should def invest in Ramon Hernandez. He's young and is great offensively. No brainer in my opinion
