Infielder Matt McLain, whom the Dbacks selected at No. 25 overall, was ranked 53rd on ESPN's pre-draft list. http://MLB.com had him 54th, Baseball America 61st and FanGraphs 63rd.

Seems like quite a reach with their pick most had him going to D'Backs in Round 2.

A very athletic 2B-SS, they say. He was just on the phone with a D-back executive.

I know ARZ was tied to Steele Walker of OU (who just went in second round to CWS), not sure about the McLain kid but "Alex Bregman" with more speed are who scouts are comparing him to. I am surprised ARZ didn't take Jackson Kowar of FLA, he dropped to KC in Comp Round C (KC picked up arguably the second best SP at #18 with Brady Singer free falling).

Kowar & Walker would have been amazing but we'll see what we have in McLain, Jake McCarthy (UVA OF - 39th pick) & Alek Thomas (HS OF - #63 pick). Smells like below slot / easy signing picks to me.

Diamondbacks value athleticism, select three hitters on 1st day of MLB draft
The Diamondbacks placed an emphasis on athletic position players on the first day of the MLB draft on Monday.

The Diamondbacks selected California high school infielder Matt McLain with the 25th overall pick in the draft. McLain, who just finished his senior season at Beckman High in Tustin, Calif., is committed to UCLA.

It was the first time in four years that the Diamondbacks did not spend their first pick on a college hitter. But it didn’t take long for the club to return to the well, as the Diamondbacks tabbed Virginia outfielder Jake McCarthy with the 39th overall selection.

So how does that work? McLain is still going to UCLA or is he now just going to skip it and go to the dbacks farm league?

As a 1st rounder, pretty sure he'll skip UCLA. Stranger things have happened, though...
