The Diamondbacks have called a 3 p.m. press conference to announce a contract extension for third baseman Chad Tracy that could keep him in Arizona through 2010.

Good or bad? Any thoughts?

Good news...he's been solid at 3rd and he keeps getting better as a hitter. Plus, he seems to have the right kind of attitude, especially after the team kept moving him around the field.

Great! He’s my 3B on my keeper fantasy league team. I’m jack’d that he’s staying with the D’backs.

Diamondbacks give Tracy $13.25 million, 3-year extension

Diamondbacks give Tracy $13.25 million, 3-year extensionBy ANDREW BAGNATO, AP Sports Writer
May 15, 2006

PHOENIX (AP) -- Third baseman Chad Tracy and the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed Monday to a $13.25 million, three-year contract extension through 2009 that includes a team option for the following season.
Tracy, who is making $381,000 this season, gets a $1 million signing bonus, $2.75 million next year, $3.75 million in 2008 and $4.75 million in 2009. Arizona has a $7 million option for 2010 with a $1 million buyout.

Tracy's extension comes five months after the club gave No. 1 starting pitcher Brandon Webb a $19.5 million, four-year contract. Like Tracy, Webb is signed through 2009 with a team option for the following season.

With the moves, the Diamondbacks hope to have a select group of young players under contract before they're eligible for salary arbitration. It also sends a message to other players within the organization.
"This is a great move of stability for us, identifying another player who we feel is a core player," general manager Josh Byrnes said. "We've already signed Brandon Webb, of course, and these sort of moves do help us stabilize our club and help us make decisions and serve as great incentives for players that follow.
"Chad's only five years removed from being drafted, and now he sits here as one of our key players and certainly very deserving of this contract," Byrnes said.
Tracy, who will turn 26 next week, was a seventh-round pick by the Diamondbacks in 2001. He is hitting .301 and leads the club in doubles (13) and home runs (six). He is in his third full season in the majors.
Tracy has improved dramatically in the field. He committed 26 errors as the club's regular third baseman in 2004. Last year, he split time between first base and the outfield before returning to third this spring. Tracy had one error in his first 36 games this season.
"This is a special moment in our lives," said Tracy, whose wife, Katie, attended the announcement. "This is a big opportunity for me. This team is definitely moving in the right direction."
Manager Bob Melvin said the long-term extensions given to Webb and Tracy could serve as a recruiting tool for free agents. "If a (free agent) is coming in the offseason, you call up Chad Tracy or Brandon Webb, they come over here and schmooze some of these guys, and knowing that we're committed to these guys means that we're committed to winning," Melvin said.

D-Backs extend Tracy

The Diamondbacks have called a 3 p.m. press conference to announce a contract extension for third baseman Chad Tracy that could keep him in Arizona through 2010.

I don’t have the exact, year-by-year numbers yet, but I understand it’s a four-year deal worth a guaranteed $13.6 million with a club option for a fifth year, which would be Tracy’s first year eligible for free agency.

The deal includes this season, although Tracy will still make $381,000 this year before getting sizeable raises in the next three years –- the seasons in which he would have been arbitration eligible.

The sides had discussed an extension in the early days of spring training but tabled the talks once the games began so as not to be a distraction.

Talks picked back up a couple of weeks ago when the club met with Tracy’s agent, Alan Nero, to discuss other matters.

After batting .308 with 27 home runs last season, Tracy is off to a solid start to this season, hitting .301 with six home runs.

Good deal for the D'backs.
