The Diamondbacks finalized their 40-man roster by adding seven players, including major league candidate Brian Barden, while designating left-hander Randy Choate for assignment. The D-Backs also added infielder Emilio Bonifacio, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, left-hander Evan MacLane, right-hander Jailen Peguero and second baseman Danny Richar to bring the roster to 40.
Choate, who was 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA in 30 games in two separate stints with the D-Backs last season, would have earned at least $562,500 this season, likely a factor in the decision to release him.
Doug Slaten emerged late last season as a top left-handed candidate for the bullpen.
Barden, who hit .298 with 16 home runs and 96 RBIs while playing third base and first base at Triple-A Tucson last season, is a candidate to make the D-Backs’ regular season roster, the team has said.
MacLane, a starting pitcher obtained from the New York Mets in the Shawn Green trade last August, has a 2.08 ERA after five appearances with Licey of the Dominican winter league, ranking in the top five in the league.
Peguero, 25, was signed as a minor league free agent from the Houston organization Nov. 1. He was 3-2 with a 2.04 ERA and 15 saves while splitting the season at Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Round Rock. He had 14 saves and a 0.70 ERA in 27 appearances for Corpus Christi before being promoted.
