Another player long past his prime. Guess Kata won't be given a shot.

Frankly the D-Backs are out of their minds. That's just my opinion of course but if they plan to cut budget and go young, then commit themselves for pete's sake, instead of signing old and bad players.

This is one I can't figure out....Even Baerga could start on a regular basis opposed to committing $1 mil to Alomar....They really desperately need an OF....Do they actually have that much faith in Danny Bautista to the start the season in RF? I know they signed Donnie Sadler to a Minor League deal, but don't know if he can be counted on in RF either....

Well don't forget, Danny hit .325 before he got injured.

That's just a slight "sample size"....Besides his heorics in the '01 Post Season, he never has done anything to warrant such a long-term contract....Jerry C. and Co. made a severe error there and should have retained Reggie Sanders (overlooking what happened that post-season with his run-in w/Brenly) over Bautista since Sanders has had a more proven career.....

I actually like the move, save it bumps Kata off 2B. Alomar is a very solid veteran presence, something we loss with Schilling and Grace and can't seem to squeeze out of RJ. Alomar is an excellent baseball guy and his knowledge of the game is superb.

Another nonsensical move ... Joe Jr. playing craps with the owner investments now, like a kid in a casino with just so much $$ to spend before he's gotta leave.

The D'backs are now beginning to make moves like a traditional first year expansion team, loading up with washed up vets that no one else wants.

This does sound bogus, or something else is up. Baerga could spot Kata if he hits like most of last season again. Besides, I would not be surprised to see them give Hairston a try at second if Kata doesn't work out. So maybe they are trading Kata, trying Alomar in right field, or Gambo's clueless. Three second baseman with Hairston in the minors make no sense.

Like Luis Gonzalez was about 4 years ago?

Oh please. Gonzo was not a washed up Vet like Alomar, Orosco, Reynolds. He was only 31 at the time. The others are 35 plus and Orosco is over 40. Their better years are far behind them. Gonzo was a mediocre 31 year old when the D-Backs got him. A mediocre 31 year old is not the same as a washed up vet. At 31, there is occasionally the chance for improvement. At 35 these guys are definitely on the downside of their career.

But even that begs the question of why a team that needs to cut payroll and is committed to rebuilding bothers to sign washed up vets.

First off....this signing has not been substantiated by any reputable source. Second Orosco and Reynolds were signed to minor league deals....there is no guarantee they will make the roster so until I see this deal in black and white I am going to assume Alomar is getting the same deal so I don't understand what this uproar is about. If these "washouts" make the team they are going to do it on their own accord.

BTW, if you need help finding any Red Sox messageboards, let me know

Whoever said that age has anything to do with being "washed up". The Tigers basically gave Gonzo away to the D'backs....who cares if he was "only 31". I could name 30 guys who washed out of the league before the age of 30.

Alomar close to deal with D-Backs
BOB BAUM / Associated Press
Posted: 34 minutes ago
PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks are close to signing 12-time All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar, a team source said Monday night.

The source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a deal could come as soon as Tuesday.
Alomar, 35, has been working out in the Phoenix area for several weeks. Signing Alomar would cement an infield that includes Shea Hillenbrand at third, newly acquired Richie Sexson at first and Alex Cintron at shortstop.

The addition of Alomar would free Matt Kata - a rookie last season - to move into the utility role previously occupied by Craig Counsell, because Kata can play second, shortstop or third.

Alomar, entering his 17th big-league season, became a free agent when the Chicago White Sox declined to offer him arbitration.

Alomar had a disappointing stint with the New York Mets before being traded to Chicago on July 1.

Alomar earned $8 million in the final year of his contract last season, but reportedly was willing to take less from the financially strapped Diamondbacks, despite more lucrative offers elsewhere.

After two sub-par seasons, he would come to Arizona motivated to return to the form that he showed through most of a career that could land him in the Hall of Fame.

Alomar came to New York in an eight-player trade with Cleveland after batting .336 with 20 home runs and 100 RBIs for the Indians in 2001.

A 10-time Gold Glove winner, he hit just .266 in 2002, matching a career-low he set in his rookie season in 1988. Alomar was batting just .262 when the trade to Chicago was made, and batted .253 for the White Sox.

Alomar began his major league career in San Diego, then played for Toronto, Baltimore, Cleveland, the Mets and the White Sox.

He would be the second significant acquisition by the Diamondbacks, who earlier sent Counsell, Junior Spivey and four other players to Milwaukee for Sexson on Dec. 1.

Edit: We don't know if the "team source" is reputable/credible though....

This is just... weird. Someone called radio today about the Suns deal and said it seems like the Colangelos have found a new drug, because they are making some real befuddled moves recently. It's like they can't decide - or remember - what the current plan is.

Could they possibly think one washed up gold-glover is going to somehow rescue this infield defensively? And you know - a million here, a million there, and pretty soon you could have kept Schilling, or gone after someone with the real goods, not a bunch of tired old farts. (I can say that, because I are one. :p )

What a bizarre team this is going to be.
