Really great to take the series against the Dodgers. A good start to the 2nd half of the season. Gibby has them fighting back no matter what. He should be manager of the year for sure. They are being fun to watch. It will be interesting to see the moves over the next weeks prior to the trade deadline. I just hope they don't give up any of their top prospects.

Thanks to Kennedy & Hudson who once again were heroic. Great to see the team pull out a series win, however, the tell-tale signs of more trouble down the road are still there... NO OFFENSE. 11 runs and 18 hits over the 3 games. Upton did squat and is now down to .284, which is the highest average in the starting line-up.
Banking on the arms of 2 pitchers is so not a recipe for success. Hopefully, somehow... someway the team can find some offense.

You are right that the hitting has been pathetic. Upton, Young & Drew need to start hitting else we will be in trouble.

And, of course, Kelly Johnson, with a batting average of .217 and already 105 strikeouts.

If he is going to carry the banner of a former D'back, why in the world would he pick Mark Reynolds. whose average is .223 with 103 strikeouts?

A lower batting average with more strikeouts than Mark Reynolds, as a 2B. Why? And that's with the benefit of hitting ahead of the heart of our batting order. If Upton, Young and Drew showed some heart, that is.

I am trying to make light of it, but not sending Kelly Johnson down to work it out and making Ryan Roberts the everyday 2B is not productive, especially when trying to find a place for Geoff Blum.

Kelly's RBI numbers make that hard.

Johnson is hitting .261/.358/.565 and Young is hitting .294/.379/.471 in July so far. What exactly are they doing recently that deserves either of them getting called out?

Maybe the focus should be more on Drew, Montero, and Upton.

I called out Johnson specifically because of competition.

Now that Geoff Blum is back, Roberts will lose playing time.

Roberts at 2B and Blum at 3B seems to be a more potent combination for the D'backs at this time than Johnson, Roberts and Blum dividing the time.

Blum is going to get a chance at 3B. At whose expense should that be?

PLAYER..........AB.........HR.........RBI....STRIKEOUTS
ROBERTS.......278........13..........40..........54.........
JOHNSON......336.........16..........42.........105.......

This is a false choice, why should Blum be getting any playing time over the other two other than rest days? A 38 yr old with a career OPS under 700? Your management choices make no sense to me. You suggested sending Johnson down to the minors.

Roberts @ 3B, Johnson @ 2B and Blum @ the bench.

The management choices are those of the Manager.

My suggestions were based on expecting Kirk Gibson to give significant playing time to Geoff Blum at 3B, putting Ryan Roberts on the bench.

In that case, I'd rather see Roberts at 2B with Johnson working out his strikeout problems and rebuilding his confidence in the Minors.

This makes no sense to me. Are you saying the decision to send down Johnson is the decision management will make? There is no way they do that because it's ridiculous. That's why your choice to do so makes no sense.

Johnson is sporting an 881 OPS and his PA/K is up over 5 this month. I'd say his confidence is just fine. On top of the fact that he's making $5M+ and isn't injured it's an amateur management decision all around.

The correct choice is keep Blum on the bench unless it's for PH or rest days, not sending Johnson down.

You and I agree about that. The correct choice is to keep Blum on the bench.

The reality is that Kirk Gibson doesn't manage that way.

Just recently he was quoted as saying something like, "I come to the park with twenty-five choices."

Look at the time wasted playing three different 1B.

I believe it is important for Roberts to be in the lineup every day, except for an occasional rest. Not to be the third man covering two positions. Especially if it as the right-handed hitting platoon vs. lefty starters.

Regarding Johnson's performance so far this year, my point was that his batting average is lower and his strikeouts higher than Mark Reynolds. That's real-time stats. Mark Reynolds is no longer a D'back.

For Johnson's sake, as well as the D'backs (which should always be the higher priority), something needs to be done before Kelly Johnson approaches Reynolds' 200 strikeout-per-season performance.

P.S.: And, sure enough, Blum is at 3B and Roberts on the bench tonight vs. the Brewers righty starter.

P.P.S.: And sure enough, again, Blum is at 3B and Roberts on the bench vs. the Rockies righty starter. The Rockies will be starting righties in all four games of this series. That's why I posted that Johnson should be sent down to work out his problems and give Roberts a place to play.
