Before lining up outside for the first time this year at the early bird meet in Waukee on March 27, Dallas Center-Grimes’ track and field season kicked off with a pair of indoor meets to warmup.

Boys

DCG got a a close look at what could come this season at the IATC Indoor Championships on March 13 in Ames.

Faced against a field over over 30 other Class 4A programs, the Mustangs placed seventh with 28 points. Prairie walked out with 64 points for the lead. But among Little Hawkeye Conference members, DCG was marked evenly with Norwalk and nearly doubled Indianola’s point total.

Giving the team its biggest boost, sophomore Jack Meggison showed up with the top time in the 800-meter run, clocked at 1 minute 55 seconds. That already surpasses state qualifier AJ Angus’ top time last season and is more than 10 seconds faster than Meggison’s freshman-best.

Sticking in the distance bracket, Sam Mora’s senior campaign is also markedly faster after finishing the 1,600 in 4:20 for a nine-second improvement on his PR last season. He was ninth in the 3,200 event that was headlined by third place Elias Arbuckle at 9:18, flirting with where he left off in his junior season.

Just a few days earlier at the A.D. Dickinson Relays, it was the sprint events that got some hot attention, as Chase Heitland made his case for one of the team’s hopeful impact athletes as a sophomore. In a field of 232 participants in the 60-meter dash, Heitland made it to the final heat and placed 13th with a time of 7.12 seconds.

Darien Walker also made the finals cut in the 60-meter hurdles and was situated third overall at 8.32 seconds. And in the shot put finals, 10th-grader Wyatt Valenta tossed 50-feet-6. He marked 50 feet at IATC three days later.

Girls

The Mustangs brought a select group to run at the IATC Indoor Championships, picking up 21st place with five points scored.

That was brought forth by Piper Messerly and Madison Stevens crossing the finish line of the 3,000-meter run nearly in tandem. At 10:35, Messerly placed sixth and was followed two second later by her senior teammate in seventh place. It was a 10-second improvement for Stevens’ previous best time.

It was a nearly identical performance compared to their 1,500 runs at the Dickinson Relays, keeping their order in place with fourth and sixth place bids.
