Continuing where I left off.

Special teams gets out on the field again, but this time, both coverages are working at near full speed. Breaston/Garvin x2/ Howling x2 and Urban field catches. Garvin and Howling get a chance to display some speed here, but you can still tell that they are holding back a little.

On the other side of the field, the QB's are running the fade route drill again, but this time from only about 15 feet in the other direction. Much more manageable. I created a point system for this round. 1 point for hitting the trash can and 3 points for making it in. The score went like this. They each had 6 attempts.

Palko = 7 points (2 in the can, one hit)
Leinart = 6 points (1 in the can, 3 hit the can) 4 out of 6 aint bad!
BSP = 2 points (in the only way you can score two points with my point system)
Warner = 0 (I don't believe he even hit a trash can all night long)

*** Horn Sounds ***

We finally see 11 on 11 drills, one play each for each 1st 2nd 3rd team. The offense completes two nice plays in a row. The first time, Castille sneaks out into the flat completely unaccounted for for at least a 15-20 yard gain and the next play they find Pope up the middle for another 15 or so. He was double covered but Leinart still got the ball in there. Get used to Pope up the middle folks. After a run to the right, there was a minor scuffle. It appears that Trevor Canfield was mixing it up with someone. It didn't last long. You can tell these guys want to hit someone.

They switch sides of the field and they do it again. Warner hits Boldin on a 15 yard crossing pattern (before anyone was even near him) and he pretty much looks uncovered. It appears that the defense was in a zone of some kind and Matt Ware got an earful from Davis.

Next, it is the 2nd team's turn and Leinart throws yet another deep pass to Breaston. Crowd erupts. On the next play, he scrambles for a really long time (probably a sack in real life) but finally gets away and hits Onrea Jones on a deep pattern.

3rd team's turn and they try a toss sweep to the right. Adams hits Stephens Howling at least 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage. I can't remember the last time the Cards have run a sweep and have it be successful. But hey, and least we are getting a little better at screens right? Then run the ball to the other side, yet another loss on the play. Ugh. On a couple more plays BSP is sacked and almost picked on a badly thrown ball.

*** Horn Sounds ***

More 2 minute drills coming up. Haggans tips a quick hitch to Fitz, but Fitz stays with it and catches it anyway. Haggans is upset with himself. On the next play, Warner pump fakes and throws a deep ball to Boldin. One of the rare times I see him misjudge a ball in the air. He turns around to jump, but the ball sails 5 yards past him. If he runs the play out instead, he catches the ball.

As I look towards the end zone to take a look at the 1 on 1 line drills, I hear the crowd booing. I look up and to the left to see a little punk in a Palomalu jersey. It was great to see the crowd react that way.... Anyway back to the drill. Iwebema beast Levi on an outside move. Watson absolutely demolishes Sendlein pushes him all the way back to the QB like Sendlein was on skiis. Branch tried to do a spin move to get by Elton Brown. Didn't work. Campbell gets by Levi. (maybe depending on where the QB is I guess)

In the middle of the field, they are running some 7 on 7 drills it looks like. Garvin gets thrown a deep ball, (not sure by whom) but he must have lost it in the air. He had position on Adams. He should have caught it. Palko hits Onrea Jones on a strike down the sidelines in stride.

Then 11 on 11 drills come back. Then run a sweep and actually get positiive yards this time, but it was only one or two. Next Warner throws a deep ball into double coverage and gets picked by McFadden. 2nd team is up next and there is a big hole up the middle for Wright to run through. Next play, Leinart throws yet another deep ball, this time to Lance Long who adjust to the play well. Gain of 35 or so.

In the final set of drill so of the night. The players regroup to watch the final 11 on 11 drills in pretty much full speed. 1st team up first and Hightower runs up the middle for 2, but they gave him 4. Whatever. Next play is a poorly thrown ball from Warner, incomplete. 3rd and 6 they say and they try my favorite, the toss sweep. He gets yardage but not enough for the first down. Defense 2, Offense 0.

2nd team gets a shot from as well. 3 run plays by Warner to Vincent and Howling. Defense stops every one of the. Defense erupts. Defense 3, Offense 0 in a sweep.

Overall impressions....

QB - Warner was not sharp at all tonight. I'm not worried, but it wasn't good to see. Leinart was the most accurate passer of the evening. He had a good night. St. Pierre was there, and Palko at least won the fade drill. He also fumbled a couple of snaps, one that Iwebema recovered.

RB - Hightower was just there as well. Didn't excite me on any play or drill tonight. I was surprised with Wright. I can almost say for certain he will be our 3rd down back when the season starts. He will see action this year.

TE - No one separated themselves from the other tonight and I'm sure this continues to be the most contested postition on the team.

WR - Most WR's looked solid, although Fitz did drop a pass, which always surprises me. Lance Long looked quick off of the line with good footwork and hands. I still don't see him making the roster this year (unless he isn't PS eligible)

OL - Incomplete. They did not do enough drills to give them much of an impression.

DL - Campbell, Watson, Iwebema looked solid. Branch and Leslie didn't. Leslie gets cut, guaranteed.

LB's - I tried looking for Brown but the LB's in general seemed to have an relaxing day. Another incomplete

DB's - This group is definitely the strength of this defense. McFadden looks to be a great pickup and DRC is still DRC. No skirmishes today though.

Offense - Did not look sharp at all. A couple of plays they had good yardage, but overall unimpressed. Leinart, Lance Long, and Breaston had good days though.

Defense - The defense was in top shape here most of the night. 3 for 3 in stops in the red zone, including 2 series that started at the 2 yard line. I came into this worried about the line play, but the definitely showed up when it counted.

Special Teams - This is the squad that better improve from last year if we want to make it back to where we were last year. Whiz has already stated that he likes Breaston on both KR/PR duty. It's a shame if that is true and Garvin/Howling can't step up and make an impact here where we desperately need it. I won't even talk about the coverage teams, I'm downright terrified.

Wish I could have stayed for longer in Flag, but I'm off to Vegas tomorrow.

Greatness.....it seems like they're running more deep passing routes than normal. Is that just because that's what sticks out to as you watch or would say that they're actually throwing deep balls more?

Thanks! Nice comprehensive reports.

As usual the defense is ahead of the offense. It's great to get the confirmation of what we suspected about our first team defensive backfield. I'm still worried about depth in that area, but if the first-teamers stay healthy that is probably the strength of the defense. At least that's what Ron Wolfley sez on the latest podcast.

It will be interesting to see who the Cardinals keep at tight end. We've come a long, long way from the days of Eric Edwards and Adam Bergen IMO.

I can't wait to see LSH in a pre-season game, specially on special teams.

Thanks again for the reports.

I think Breaston was runnng more deep routes for sure. Pope has always been a 'up the seam' guy to me.

I think airing these deep balls also gives the coaches a chance to see what you can do. I don't know if that will translate into the games or not though.

Great stuff DCR.

Nice to hear Matt is responding the way he is as it sounds like he has looked the sharpest of the QB's so far in camp (with the caveat of Warner's hip rehab of course)

Next step....Preseason.

Thx for the update.

My thoughts based on your observations and others at camp:
1) Levi continues to be average at best
2) Leinart-I have always believed in the guy and think he will win a Super Bowl
3) LSH-liked him coming out of college and it sounds like he will contribute
4) Warner-still a little concerned about his hip due to his age
5) DB's-keep hearing good things and believe they will be very very solid
6) Campbell-still haven't heard his name mentioned much as a pass rusher, concerned we may to blitz too much
7) Big Herman Munster-maybe I'm wrong but I really feel we are wasting our time playing this kid at tackle. He played guard at LSU and never demonstrated in college he had the feet to handle quicker guys and i remember him getting abused at the senior bowl in one on ones. Is he big and strong? yes. Just think back to the days of L Davis playing T for the Cards and how he would get schooled by fast DE's. But who am I not a coach for sure.

DCR, you mentioned that we never seem to be able to run sweep plays. Just go back to the NFC Championship game, on the winning drive and we go for it on 4th and one from mid-field and Tim Hightower picks up the crucial first down on a sweep to the right, behind a nice block by #45 (Terrelle Smith). But you're right that we usually aren't successful.

One thing I'm curious about. Does Breaston look any bigger or stronger than last year?

I know he made great strides in that dept. between his first and second years, but I also must admit to cringing everytime he'd get hit making a catch in traffic.

Canfield took offense to the DE's hand in his face. He said there is an unwritten 3 second rule. I guess you could say he was a little ticked off at getting his eye gouged. You do these things and he gets even more aggressive!

To me, he appeared to have added a few pounds of muscle. Definitely looked stronger.

Unfortunately for him, he still resembles Steven A. Smith.

That play looked more like a slant that Hightower bounced outside. Don't have the game on the DVD so don't know for sure.
