Time is running out for Shawn Green and the Diamondbacks, who also face a soft Monday deadline with unsigned 2004 first-round draft pick Stephen Drew.

The Diamondbacks' deal with Los Angeles is contingent upon Green agreeing to waive his no-trade clause and agree to an extension with a substantial pay cut by 10 a.m. Team officials traveled to Orange County to try to sway Green during a 48-hour negotiating window.

If Green declines, the Diamondbacks would lose out on a power-hitting right fielder and $8 million.

Rejecting a trade also would put Green, 32, and the Dodgers in an awkward situation since the Dodgers have inquired about moving Green in trades with the Cubs and Diamondbacks this off-season.

A rejected trade could affect the status of free-agent left-hander Odalis Perez, who was close to signing a three-year, $24 million contract with the Dodgers.

Much of the $8 million the Diamondbacks would receive in a Green trade could be used toward signing Drew, who hasn't enrolled for spring semester classes at Florida State that started Wednesday.

Drew, 21, a shortstop who also can play center field, withdrew from fall semester classes in an effort to work out an agreement with the Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks hold his negotiating rights until he attends a class, which would then postpone his eligibility for the draft until June.

But if Drew doesn't enroll in school by Monday, he would need special permission from the FSU's dean's office to attend classes, a school spokesman said.

Drew, who is being advised by agent Scott Boras, is seeking a multiyear contract with a sizeable bonus.

The Diamondbacks hold the first pick in the 2005 draft by virtue of their major league-worst 111 losses in 2004. San Diego, which had the top pick in 2004, gave a $3.15 million bonus in a pre-arranged deal to high school shortstop Matt Bush, who is represented by Greg Genske - Green's agent.

The Diamondbacks also await the status of CEO-Elect Jeff Moorad, who has applied for a stake in ownership in the team. A Baseball Weekly report stated Major League Baseball owners planned to reject Moorad's bid.

But Commissioner Bud Selig rarely holds a vote unless an issue is at least close to the 75 percent approval needed.

MLB usually seeks a "control" person who is held accountable for the franchise and usually has the most money invested in the franchise. The Diamondbacks' current general partnership is headed by Ken Kendrick, who was unavailable for comment.

About the only certainty is that five-time Cy Young Award winner Randy Johnson will agree to terms on a two-year extension with the New York Yankees worth around $32 million, which would finalize a trade that would send starting pitcher Javier Vazquez, left-hander Brad Halsey, catcher Dioner Navarro and $9 million to the Diamondbacks.

But the Diamondbacks could face a logjam at catcher if the Green trade fails, because Navarro was slated to be dealt to the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks plan to let Koyie Hill and Chris Snyder compete for starting catcher.

Should Green reject the trade, the Diamondbacks likely would resume talks with free-agent right fielder Jeromy Burnitz and probably keep first baseman Shea Hillenbrand, who is arbitration eligible and could earn up to $4 million.

Burnitz was close to an agreement with the Diamondbacks before a three-team trade involving Green and the Diamondbacks was nearly finalized last month.

Between the two - give me Drew! I vote Drew.

If the choice is both or neither?! (the 8 mil they'd get from the trade) Then Green and his agent have em over a barrell.

Losing both
