Give credit to Denver Broncos general manager George Paton.
Paton gave big contract extensions to four of the team's key players last season, notably including star cornerback Pat Surtain. After signing a four-year, $96 million contract extension, PS2 went on to win the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award in 2024.
Surtain's extension set a record for the biggest defensive back contract in NFL history, averaging $24 million per season with $77.5 million guaranteed. It was a mega deal when signed last September, but just six months later, it already looks like a bargain.
Jalen Ramsey ($24.1 million) and Jaycee Horn ($25 million) have already surpassed Surtain's yearly average, and Derek Stingley just reset the market.
The Houston Texans are giving Stingley a three-year, $90 million deal that averages $30 million per season, a full $6 million more per year than PS2's contract. Stingley also received $89 million guaranteed, $11.5 million than Surtain.
With the NFL's salary cap continuing to rise and other cornerbacks getting new deals, PS2's contract will become more of a bargain with each passing year. It might eventually reach a point where Denver has to sweeten the deal, but for now, the Broncos have Surtain signed for the next five seasons at a bargain rate for a reigning DPOY.
