Despite Criticism, Business As Usual For Mike McCoy

https://www.azcardinals.com/news/despite-criticism-business-as-usual-for-mike-mccoy

If Mike McCoy is worried about his job status with the Cardinals, he’s not letting on.

The Cardinals’ offensive coordinator has come under outside fire for the team’s inefficient start, but said Tuesday that he does not feel any extra pressure to succeed in Thursday night’s clash with the Broncos.

“We’re preparing like every other week,” McCoy said. “Our objective every week is to go out and win the next game we’re playing. That’s our focus.”

The Cardinals are averaging 13.7 points per game and have the fewest yards. While the criticism seems to be reaching a fevered pitch, McCoy said he avoids the chatter.

No offense, but I don’t watch a lot of TV,” McCoy said. “I don’t read papers. I don’t get on the internet. I’m too busy doing other things, putting plans together. And when my family is in town, I spend every minute I can with them, or talking to them at night when they’re in San Diego, things like that. I’ve been in this long enough (to not get wrapped up in the fervor).”

While many outsiders are pointing at McCoy’s schemes as the root of the issue on offense, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said McCoy should not be the scapegoat for the ills.

“It’s a team game,” Fitzgerald said. “Everybody’s got to be held accountable. None of us has done a good enough job to this point to be successful. To try to blame one person is not fair or right. Unfortunately in this profession, there always needs to be a finger pointed at somebody. Somebody has to be blamed. It’s always been that way, and it’s unfortunate.”

It doesn’t matter if he watches television. No one is covering us at this point anyway. But he won’t ge able to avoid the boos raining down on him from the stands. Fitzgerald is taking the high road because that’s who he is. But David Johnson (The 40 million dollar man) will be vocal. McCoy is a stubborn clown. He is the first scapegoat. After he is gone, we can move on to Wilks

What makes you say DJ will be vocal?

Clearly, he doesn't watch film either.

The only thing I can say in his defense, is if the OL is blasting holes for DJ, we wouldn't be having this discussion. I don't like his play calling. I think he's clearly not using the few weapons we have. Obvious pass plays, we need DJ in one them, too. Fitz aint outrunning anyone anymore but he's still a tough cover who will get you a great catch. We need more plays that work with what we got.

To his credit it probably only adds fuel to the fire if he admits that he is worried about job security.

Haha I remember this idiot’s comments always used to rile me up so much when he was coaching the Chargers. Pissed me so much once that nearly resulted in a stroke.

The worst part about him isn’t that he’s god awful at his job, it’s his smug self believing that he’s actually good at it.

Like most of the old school OCs in the league, McCoy will take care of himself. He is not going to change. He is going to stick with what he does, and will go down with the ship. I have never doubted that he would be a mid-season fire.

After McCoy was fired in Denver, did their offense improve? Seems to me like it's still bad, so there must be more to the story.

Good question! Actually, by most measures, the Broncos got slightly worse over the final 6 games:

Code:
Pts 1stD TotYd PassY RushY TO
With McCoy (10 games) 18.3 19.1 329.8 216.9 112.9 2.3
After McCoy (6 games) 17.7 17.7 314.5 194.0 120.5 1.8

I guess it's a good thing he didn't sell his house in San Diego because he should be moving back there before this year ends.

It so depressing how far we've fallen in just a couple of years. We were 13-3 in 2015, and beat the 49ers 47-7 in the 3rd game of that season. 47-7!

And now some people cheering for us to lose, so that one of our coaches will get fired?

And some people saying everybody needs to be gone, from the GM down to the interns?

Dark days in Cardinal Land my friends.

No one I know is rooting against the Cardinals tomorrow and no one rational wants the entire management and staff gone. We simply want the Cardinals to win tomorrow so that confidence is built and that McCoy is fired by the bye week so that the locker room doesn’t implode

I seem to get lucky when I come over for a game, prolly 90% wins when I'm there. So there's a 90% chance they win!!

McCoy obviously doesn't watch television..... if he watched even 1 game for 10 minutes, he would have added at least 2 more plays to his 6 deep playbook.

I guess he truly feels like Rosen needs it "dumbed down."

When you say "we" who does that include sir?

Do you presume to speak for the entire board?
