Detroit Tigers left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin — an 11-year MLB veteran on a minor league contract — did not make the 2025 Opening Day roster, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who was granted anonymity because the roster move is not official.

Opening Day is scheduled for Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Before then, the Tigers must cut their MLB roster to 26 players.

Chafin is expected to report to Triple-A Toledo.

In the 2024 season, Chafin posted a 3.51 ERA with 31 walks and 70 strikeouts across 56⅓ innings in 62 relief appearances for the Tigers (41 games) and Texas Rangers (21 games). The Tigers traded Chafin to the Rangers at the July 30 trade deadline for prospects Chase Lee and Joseph Montalvo.

Chafin signed a minor league contract Feb. 24 with the Tigers, in which he earns a prorated $2.5 million for time spent in the big leagues.

Chafin hasn't pitched at the Triple-A level since 2022 during a rehabilitation assignment. Before then, he hadn't been in Triple-A since 2016.
