The City of Detroit is preparing for an influx of fans on Friday, April 4, as the Detroit Tigers host their Opening Day game at Comerica Park. Officials have announced street closures, parking options, and public transit alternatives to ease congestion downtown.

Here is what to know if you plan on attending the game.

Street closures (7 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

According to the city, street closures around the ballpark will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., including:

  • Montcalm from Brush to Woodward
  • Brush from Beacon to Montcalm
  • Adams from Witherell to Brush

Witherell from Adams to the Fisher Freeway Service Drive will close at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Parking options

Fans can park in city-owned garages, use metered street parking with the Park Detroit app, or park in lots. Street parking will have expanded time limits for the event.

  • City-owned garages available for $10 on April 4, from 6 a.m. until midnight:
    • Ford Underground Garage at 30 E. Jefferson Ave.
    • Eastern Market Garage at 2727 Riopelle St.
  • Metered parking:
    • Pay for up to four hours via the Park Detroit app or kiosks.
    • Extend parking through the app and receive mobile alerts.
  • Parking lots:
    • Park only in lots with clearly posted rates.
    • Avoid parking in vacant lots or paying unauthorized individuals for parking.

The Park Detroit app also allows drivers to pay for parking in garages and lots in advance, the city said in a release. More information can be found on parkdetroit.us.

Parking spots around Comerica Park can also be reserved at ParkWhiz.com, the Tigers' parking partner.

Illegally parked vehicles risk tickets and towing.

Public transit alternatives

To avoid traffic and parking challenges, fans are encouraged to take public transit.

  • DDOT Buses: Fare is $2. Major routes, including Woodward, Gratiot, Grand River, and Michigan Avenue, lead downtown. Passes can be purchased in advance on the Token Transit app.
  • QLINE: Visitors can park in Midtown or New Center and take the QLINE downtown for free.
  • Detroit People Mover: Free rides available from 6:30 a.m. to midnight.

The city is also reminding the public that tailgating is prohibited on public property.
