Roy Wittke, 46, who spent the past three years as offensive coordinator at Arkansas, will join Dirk Koetter’s staff at Arizona State as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Wittke fills the position that became vacant when quarterbacks coach Mark Helfrich was hired as offensive coordinator at Colorado.
ASU ranked third nationally in passing in 2005, averaging 373.4 yards, and second in total offense, with more than 519 yards per game. Wittke inherits two top quarterbacks in Sam Keller and Rudy Carpenter, the nation’s pass efficiency leader who stepped up as starter after Keller was injured.
"We are extremely pleased to be able to bring a coach with the experience and background of Roy Wittke into our program," said Koetter. "Roy is very well thought of throughout the coaching ranks and is an excellent recruiter. I know he will step in here and help us continue our offensive success.’’
Wittke’s Arkansas offense ranked 12th nationally in rushing in 2005, averaging 216.9 yards per game. The Razorbacks averaged 360.6 yards of total offense and 25.7 points per game. In 2004, led by All-Southeastern Conference quarterback Matt Jones, Arkansas averaged 29.8 points, 187.4 rushing yards and 379.9 total yards.
"I am thrilled to have a chance to work with an outstanding coaching staff at Arizona State University," says Wittke. "I am especially excited to work with one of the most well-respected offensive minds in the country in Dirk Koetter. I want to contribute to the success of the program and I cannot wait to get started."
Wittke has 26 years of college coaching experience, including 13 years at Eastern Illinois. He also coached at Central Missouri State and Montana State. He is a 1982 graduate of Wisconsin Eau-Claire.
Koetter said he also spoke with former ASU quarterback Danny White about the position. White is in his first year as head coach of the expansion Utah Blaze franchise in the Arena Football League after a long and successful tenure as head coach of the Arizona Rattlers.
"The timing just wasn't right for what he is doing right now with the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League,’’ Koetter said.
Koetter also announced the hiring of Charles Ragle and Josh Brown as graduate assistants. Ragle had been an assistant coach at Scottsdale Chaparral High School, and Brown comes to ASU from Foothill Junior College in California.
