I just caught the last 1/2 of it, around 7:30 am. Surprised nobody else posted it, but he had some interesting comments. I might have messed up on some quotes since it was hours ago, but just had time to post.

  • McCown - sticking by his decision. Still impressed with his athletic ability and sounded extremely confident. Said that drafting a QB in round 1 would be a waste because since it takes so long to develop a QB it would hurt the chances of making the playoffs this year. Pointed out that NY brought in Warner and Pittsburgh still has Maddox since they can't rely on rookies to contribute the 1st year.
  • Defense - had an interesting comment on the cutting of the "big" DT's (Bell and Tanner). Can't remember the exact words, but something along the lines of that in the division, you can't compete size for size with the opponents OL, so you need to compete on speed. Speed is Pendergast's main focus on defense.
  • Starks is looking good. Good speed and cover ability. He might go full-speed next week.

Starks actually took the entire practice today, including 11 on 11 team work.

Interesting. This is the kind of strategy/tactics that have been missing from the Arizona sideline for the past... oh, 8 years?

I actually agree, in large part, with Coach Green on this. Using their speed, King/Dockett and Bryant might be able to do some damage in the middle against the NFC West interior O-lines.

This is the Jimmy Johnson approach--

he knew when he took over the Cowboys that he wouldnt be able to "out big" the Giants and Redskins running games--

he instead thought that a deep rotation of smaller but quicker/faster defensive linemen would nullify the size advantage--

he was more or less right

sounds good in theory. But on running plays, those guys will obviously have to avoid or get off the blocks of much bigger oline man.

If an opposing OC can figure out that his center or guard can single team our DT, we gonna have problems. Not saying its going to happen. just thinking out loud. For that matter, Davis and Bell were almost always single teamed last year. The only D end that I EVER saw double teamed was Dennis Johnson.

I just don't want to see Bryant and Dockett getting blown five yards off the line of scrimmage

That's part of the beauty of the 1-gap system. The player is only responsible for covering their gap between offensive linemen. The linebackers and a safety are responsible for the others. As long as our linemen show the ability to explode into their gaps, they'll have to trust the other players to be able to cover theirs.

I'm getting closer to feeling like we have the personnel (except at maybe NT and MLB, which we knew about and didn't get worse with the release of Bell and Tanner) to utilize this system. If we can get a live body in the middle, and solidify the tackling techniques of our linebackers (namely Thompson and McKinnon, but Adrian Wilson, too), it might just be crazy enough to work.

Just ask the Dallas Cowboys.

My real concern now is Levar Fisher's knee, he again is not able to practice from what Jim O posted.

I know we drafted Dansby and we have some depth there but I think Fisher would REALLY fit the system DG wants to use because he was so fast. Looks like we're going to see a lot of Dansby and Hayes this year if Fisher's knee doesn't heal .

Tough break I was really looking for him to have a breakout year if healthy.

Trotter would look good in our uni's, and depending on cost Julian Peterson.

Yep he turned down an offer that was huge, SF is furious with him but he says because he can play DE, LB and Safety he deserves more than urlacher et al.

He did get an offer right below Urlacher. An article in a SF paper said that the offer would make him the 2nd highest paid LB right behind Ray Lewis. the contract would also be the biggest contract that the 49ers have ever given out, and he still said no.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2004/06/10/SPG4D73GBC1.DTL

""We've offered this athlete the biggest contract in the history of the 49ers," Donahue said in a transcript of quotes obtained from the team. "We have offered him the second-highest linebacker contract in the history of the National Football League. The only player at his position that would have a higher contract than he would is Ray Lewis. Ray Lewis is an MVP of the league and a perennial Pro Bowler."

Donahue went on to say that the offer included a $15.5 million signing bonus. The overall deal, Donahue maintains, is higher than the "new" money Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington received in an extension in December.

Sources say that Poston was seeking about $30 million in guaranteed money for Peterson. Neither Kevin Poston nor Donahue would confirm that figure."

I dont believe that last part about the 30 mill., not even the Postons are that stupid. It is probably at the 20 mill. mark though.

I'm really starting to hate the Poston brothers, I hope they get bit on the ass on this one and players stop hiring them or owners just refuse to negotiate with them....

SJ Merc had a similar article, and they threw out the 30 million rumor 2-3 days ago.

Right now they sound VERY pessimistic about keeping Peterson they're convinced Poston wants him somewhere else. the rumor is Detroit because of Mariucci etc.

Postons are money hungry agents. I hope they get decertified and black balled by the league.

Why do you guys feel that way? They are only doing their job which is to negotiate with money hungry owners to get as much as possible for their client.

Why you ask? There were reports that Pace stated in a newspaper that he never ask for a 27 million dollar signing bonus his agents were. It is a known fact that the Poston hold their players out if they do not get their way. Here's an article I found in the net.

Posted by jonathan on Mon - Mar 29 - 04:37am:

Orlando Pace ended his silence Thursday on his latest contract stalemate with the Rams. And he ended it in a big way.
Responding to an article in Sunday's Post-Dispatch, Pace said, "If what was written is true, and they're willing to go $15-16-17 million in signing bonus, I think we can get something done."

Citing two team sources, the Sunday story said the Rams would have been willing to boost their initial offer of a $13 million signing bonus to as high as $16 million or $17 million.

"If I knew that, we could've really gotten a deal done," Pace said.

But things never got that far after Pace's agent, Carl Poston, made a March 4 counter offer of seven years, $71 million, including a $27 million signing bonus. The Poston counter proposal called for $34 million of guaranteed money.

When asked if those numbers were really what he was seeking from the Rams, Pace replied: "No. No. Not at all."

Then Pace dropped a very strong hint that he would either change agents or would instruct Poston to lower his contract demands substantially.

"There will probably be some changes in the future," Pace said.

Pace emphasized the point about making changes a couple of times during a telephone interview Thursday.

"My whole deal is I want to be in St. Louis, and hopefully we can get something worked out," Pace said.

Thursday's comments marked the first time during his seven seasons with the Rams that Pace has talked specifically about his contract situation - at least in terms of numbers.

Whether it was during contract negotiations as a rookie in 1997, or his franchise tag stalemate of a year ago, Pace has maintained a low profile.

That's the problem with some players, these days...They don't realize that the agents "WORK FOR THEM"! The agent shouldn't be calling all the shots! Pace should've know what his agent was negotiating for, on his behalf...This goes for all players.
