he Diamondbacks have called up recent Cuban signee Yasmany Tomas from Triple-A, the club announced. Tomas had opened the season in the upper minors despite inking a six-year, $68.5MM contract to join Arizona over the offseason.

Yasmany Tomas

Of course, Tomas is just 24 years of age and never really settled on a defensive position over the spring, making his early-season demotion more than understandable. While he did not do much with the 23 plate appearances he saw at the Triple-A level, Tomas also got over 70 plate appearances in the spring to prepare him for the season.

SOOOOOOO, where does he play and who sits? Does this mean a trade is about to go down? I noticed he only played OF at Reno.

was batting .190 in AAA, and he joins an already crowded outfield. interesting to see how this plays out.. and why make this move NOW? obviously the at bats he was getting in AAA were unproductive, and our outfield is overly crowded.. i don't understand the timing.

Interesting move - would prefer he stay down a little longer

The corresponding move was to option AJ Schugel to Reno - he pitched 3 innings in loss to Dodgers.

Mark Trumbo trade maybe? How about him for Dioner Navarro straight up? Navarro is acting as their DH and they only have 3 OFers on their roster. Makes sense to me since Navarro wants to catch.

Yup, unless you are going to play him everyday, when this makes no sense. Then with that being the case, who sits? He is not playing 3B.

Navarro makes 5 million/year - and while Trumbo is not ideal, he has the power we need to outscore teams.

Unless there would be a SP involved :)

But Trumbo and Tomas cannot play in the OF together. Doesn't matter anyways, the Twitter just said Tomas is here to ride the bench and PH.

The optimist in me says maybe they're close to moving Trumbo, but I don't see it.

I don't see how Tomas is going to learn to play the OF if he is merely a pinch hitter or starting once a week.

Perhaps they want Major League coaches working with him non-stop to ease him into a rotation.

I'd hope that we also have coaches in the minors that are as good, if not better, at teaching young guys the tools of the trade.

Teams are not going to give him ANYTHING to hit until he proves he can lay off pitches. He is TOO overly aggressive, imo.

If they throw a fast ball it will be out of the zone or low.

This is the one move that still has me scratching my head.

How is he going to become a better baseball player by sitting on the bench? He could be getting everyday AB's down in AAA.

My only guess would be that they want the coaching he gets up in the Majors?

That is what Hall said on the radio - they think having him work with Grace, etc was more beneficial in the long run.

But, didn't rule out a return to Reno if he didn't get enough playing time.

My guess is he sticks around until Lamb is back - then reevaluate what to do.

The D-backs say he is much more comfortable now, both at-bat and in the field.

A foreign speaking player in a new country. Playing at the Major League level.

I'd say he's acclimating pretty quickly. We have a much needed additional middle-of-the-order hitter.

All in all, with several starters above or just below .300, this is a comer team. 2016 should be a fun year. Tomas is settling nicely and if our pitching rounds out, much potential here.

What do they do with Lamb now? Do they move Tomas back to a crowded OF where everyone's playing pretty well offensively.

Million dollar question. Space somewhere will need to be made. Lamb was the hottest hitter on the team before his injury.

Pollock is entrenched in CF, but Inciarte leads the team with hits. So that leaves Trumbo and Peralta on the fringe. Trumbo brings much needed power to the lineup, and Peralta has shown potential against righties.

It's a sucky lose-lose situation and I'm glad I'm not calling the shots here. An unpopular decision will have to be made.
