Just heard on the radio. The Diamondbacks trade Kata to the Phillies for reliever Tim Worrell. Also, the Phillies are going to chip in money to help pay Worrell's contract.

I like this trade. Kata is a utility player at best. More a minor leaguer than major leaguer player. Kata was not in the Diamondbacks plans and to get Worrell for Matt is fine with me.

Worrell has had some success but has been struggling this year. Maybe a change of scenery will help? Getting out of Coors East should put a smile on his face.

I didnt think we needed any more relievers with an ERA over 7.00. At least we didnt give up anything important.

Worrell apparently had "psychological issues" earlier this season and missed a good amount of time trying figure them out. He has come back pretty decently (2 ER in 6 IP) since his mental health problem was supposedly resolved. I'm pretty sure schillingfan could delve more into Worrell's issues if needs be.

As far as the trade goes, Kata is worthless and Worrell has potential. Another low risk, high reward trade that could be horrific(Herges), meaningless(Mondesi), or outstanding(Gonzo). Either way, it's probably just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Yeah that's the way it works. Once those mental health issues are resolved thats usually the last you hear about it. Kind of like having a wort removed.

Agree, Kata is worthless in Arizona. The Diamondbacks have another player just like him in Tucson and his name is Andy Green. The good thing about Worrell is, he is a free agent after this year.

Does anyone know who the Diamondbacks let go to make room for Worrell?

I'm VERY fine with this. Means Andy Green is now our official everyman - bring him up while he's peaking! LOL.

Kata was on the 40-man, so that clears that spot. Once he's in the pen, I suspect Almanza or Aquino gets sent down.

One recent report suggested the personal psych problems were alcohol-rehab related - not sure that's Worrell himself or someone in the family, but even if its him, that's probably a manageable issue if he cooperates.

His family lives in Phoenix, so perhaps closer proximity to his loved ones will help alleviate some of his problems. I'm probably a bit too optimistic, but the fact remains that Kata was useless and at least the front office is trying while not mortgaging the future.

EDIT - I also want to add that Phillies GM Ed Wade has some sort of anti-Midas touch with almost all of his moves. Hopefully he keeps up that trend with this deal.

If he can do what he did for SF that would be great. one year he had 2.25 era and the next had a 2.87 era.

 I was a huge Kata fan. But I like the deal for AZ. We get a "could be" good pitcher.

I think it's a washed up guy, but we didn't give up much. I think overall, Kata is better Worrell at this point, but losing Kata won't sink our slim hopes at a playoff. I'm kinda like, this is their big move before the trade deadline? I was hoping for more help.

Heck, bring up some guys from the minors. Couldn't be worse than some of the gasoline arms we've been throwing out there lately! :D

Dbacks are in a tough spot, though, and I think these are the right moves to be trying to make.

The only players that are available that could even make this team a contender are players who the team will need to give up top prospects like Jackson and Quentin for. None of us want that.

But the team doesn't want to bail out of the race either, so moves need to be made. So making moves that really don't kill the team's future, but give a slim shot at improving the present season are the ones the team needs to make.
