5-0 Diamondbacks in the bottom of the seventh. Vargas looks like he is the best pitcher on this staff. D'Backs knock out Hudson. Padres lost again. A win tonight and they will only be 3.5 out of first.

Holy crap, Bruney comes in and they have scored one run and have two on with no one out. Snyder drops a foul tip that would of struck out Furcal. Next, Clayton makes a nice play on a grounder but throws it home for some reason. The Diamondbacks could of blown this game open but a couple of guys have left guys on base.

Freaking Bruney! Gives up 4 runs without getting anyone out and they're still hitting.

Glad to see Melvin getting animated. The umpires have given a lot of the close calls to the Braves.

Its something different every night. This team makes me nuts. How can every aspect of the team be so inconsistent.

Thank god. Bell must be the only guy on the bench with a brain.

Bruney comes in and throws hard but once somebody gets a hit the wheels almost always come off for this guy. He's a major choke artist.

Extra innings. Jim Wolf is now on the top-3 of worst umpires in the league.

5-5 bottom of the 10th. Maybe Snyder can be productive this inning.

ALEX CINTRON!!! YEAH BABY

Dbacks win 6-5 and are now 3.5 games behind the Padres.

Well, it was a terrific ending to the game. Hopefully this game will spark this team. They haven't had a real hot streak yet, and almost every team has at least one a season.

Its amazing, the Dbacks have gained 3 games on the division leaders in a week (and a mediocre week at that).

You can't excuse Bruney's crappy performance by blaming the lousy HP ump - Vargas managed, Valverde got by, and so did Cormier. The problem was Bruney. You could tell immediately he was bad tonight, and he kept looking at the dugout for help, but Melvin goes out and tells him 'it's your game.'

Will Melvin eventually realize Valverde is his closer? Probably not - he seems to like Bruney's sour attitude and not like Valverde's enthusiasm -- Bruney postgame: "I don't care about tonight's game. I pitch well, I pitch bad - doesn't matter to me. Sorry I put them in a spot to have to struggle back. Team won."
I have started to really dislike Bruney.

Other than that stinkpot performance, it was a very enjoyable, energized game.

btw - Monsoon's here!

Who is excusing Bruney's performance because of the ump? We all said Bruney was crap tonight but we also mentioned the umps sucked. The two ball calls in the 9th and Chad Tracy being called out at first when he was clearly safe. Besides the bad calls, Bruney is the one who gave up all those hits and game-tying homer.

If Bruney really made those comments after the game, I would hope some of his teammates talk to him. The guy looks like he does not care when he is on the mound. He shows no emotion.

I remember awhile back I posted that Bruney does not have the mental game to be a closer and you were defending Bruney. I guess you came to the realization he does not have the mental game to be a closer. :D

I hope Lyon can come back in the next three weeks to help this bullpen. Besides Valverde, who by the way did a very nice job last night getting out of that jam, I would like to see Melvin give Worrell a shot at the closer position. If it does not work out, so be it. It's got to be better than Bruney.

Zona, as I was driving home, Dave Burns was defending Bruney by saying how bad the calls were by the ump, 'can't entirely lay this at Brian Bruney's feet.' Melvin said something very loosely along those lines, too - Bruney was OK, could have been a whole different outcome if he'd gotten the calls he should have. True, I guess - but the ump was awful all night. We were booing him long before Bruney got out there. Everyone else managed to adjust.

You could see very early on Bruney was upset by the ump - he kept staring over at the dugout like someone was going to go repair the strike zone. (Our joke was, "There's a hole where the strike zone filet should be!")

And that is what he said on the postgame radio interview, as best I could remember it, because it REALLY hit me - as well as saying how he doesn't pitch to get an ERA, he pitches for the team to get a win, although obviously he's rooting for himself.

You were right - he has the wrong mind-set. Rather than resilient and enjoying the challenge, he sounds like he is sour, shut-down, tunes everything out, and sort of expects the worse.

Dave Burns also said it was NOT a happy clubhouse after the game.

Bruney let the bad calls get to him, which simply cannot happen. He needed to be able to move past that. Also, let's not forget that even before the bad calls, Bruney allowed the tying run to go to the plate with no outs. That Mr. Bruney did all by himself. He deserves the blame.

Valverde, though, WOW. This guy is pitching like he did two years ago, and it's great to see.

Braves @ Dbacks; Game 2

Man this was one hell of a game! It was everything you can ask for in a baseball game!

Both of the starting pitchers were battling tough! Sosa started for the Braves. He was great, but he threw alot of pitches too early. His pitch count got too high, and by the start of the 6th, the relievers were called upon. Then, and only then, were the dbacks able to put some wood on the balls.

Halsey threw a great game too for the Dbacks. But that ended in the 7th. The tomahawks teed off on his ass! Braves took the lead in the 7th, 2-1.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the 8th, where the Dbacks manufactured a run, and tied it up.

But it didn't stay tied for long. Dbacks brought Valverde in for the 9th. Bad move! Andrew Jones was at the plate. Jones found nothing but air on the first pitch. Even a Braves heckler in our section was laughing and yelling at the huge swing and miss, and the fact that it was all air. Then comes pitch 2, Jones fouls it away. He is down in the count 0-2. Then pitch 3. WHACK!!! Andrew Jones puts a tomahawk chop on that ball and sends it into the left field bleachers. The heckler was suddenly the heckled one as there was a massive abundance of Braves fans in our section, and at the game in general! :D

32,000 and some change made a great crowd. But 10,000 or better were Braves fans. And they were LOUD!!! The Dbacks tried to put together something in the 7th, 2 runners were on with 2 out. Green was at the plate, and he whacked the ball to the deep part of right-center, sort of in front of our section in the RF bleachers. The ball dropped, and fell flat in Andrew Jones' glove on the warning track. Dback fans were screaming home run as it was in the air, Braves fans were screaming fall, fall!!! It fell alright! Then the Braves fans went nuts, Jones turned around and nodded to the section and grinning, then he tossed the ball into the stands where some kid grabbed it. Andrew Jones is an exceptional ball player, and a class act!!

All in all, one hell of a terrific game. Even though the stadium was quite loud with cheering as the bottom of the 9th came to an end. And it was not loud because of any boos from Dback fans! :D

Diamondbacks win and move within 2.5 games of San Diego! Javy pitched great and Clark goes yard once again. I really thought Worrell was going to come in the 9th but Melvin stuck with Bruney. Andruw Jones scares me. Thankfully he did not do any damage in the 9th.

It really is amazing that this team is just 2.5 games out the way they've played at home this year. FINALLY they win a home series!
