Well.. the Dbacks started their homestand in a rather respectable manner winning 2-out-of-3 from what has become their Interleague rival, the Detroit Tigers... Now, let's see if the Dbacks can atone/avenge of last wk's horrible showing during the last series against the Giants (which took place at SBC)...

LOCAL TV SCHEDULE:

I hope Halsey can revert back to his winning ways tonight, or else it's very possible he might be demoted (or sent to the bullpen) when Ortiz returns (and if Vargas continues to pitch well).... Obviously, that's based on too many contingencies..... Webb and Estes have been really solid lately and of course the offense has shown a pulse as of late (especially Shawn Green)... The Giants come into this series in the midst of a 4-game losing streak that began when the Dbacks defeated them the final game of last week's series at SBC Park by the score of 7-2... The Dbacks have generally been impressive against their inner-division foes, so let's hope that the trend continues.....

Wow. And I thought last night was a drag!

Went Tuesday as usual but decided to go again last night anyhow, thinking Webb/Reuter gave us a pretty good shot and I could use a fun game. Not enjoyable - we looked lame, careless, and totally uninspired.

I figured we'd be OK tonight, not likely to get swept by the lousy, lowly Gnats - Phew. Man. What has happened to these guys? Having a Retro week, all the way back to 2004? They are playing really boring, ugly ball.

We usually do perk up once the Monsoon arrives, so fingers crossed the July 8 predicted seasonal start date is on target. Otherwise, we won't even be a .500 team.

being swept by the lowly Giants has made me disgusted. how can we be fans of something like this? what are these guys doing? do we blame Estes? or is it something else? is it maybe chris snyder making bad calls? i've been somewhat underimpressed with him this season, esp. after we had 2 pretty darn good Cs last year (one that caught a perfect game...). what gives?

Pretty darn good? Hammock (who is currently injured anyways) and Brito arent an upgrade over what we currently have. I was expecting to get a bit more production from our catchers before the year began, but it certainly wouldnt be any better with Hammock or Brito.

i guess i can't argue that. hammock was probably the equivalent of snyder anyway... i wasn't aware he was injured... shows how much i'm paying attention, eh?

and why is it that we keep going with rookies in arguably the most important (at least #2) position on the field? if you want to bottom dollar something, the last place it should be done, in my opinion, is the catcher.

There are very, very few really good catchers all-around with decent bats, and they cost a fortune and are at a premium. Snyder was a very good catching prospect defensively and he had a solid, patient bat, and he was not ready to come up here last year - he's never even been to Tucson. His minor league numbers included 1.5 K per walk (that's very acceptable) with 43 HR and just 22 Errors in 310 games.

Athough he's in the big leagues now, young catchers typically take a few years longer than others to get all aspects of their games together, since they DO have a more demanding position (i.e., Barajas). Snyder skipped college and went right to grad school, so to speak, so let's cut the kid a little slack.

Everyone involved says he calls a good game and receives very well, and when I've been at the games, I've noticed that for short stretches (esp with Halsey or when the pitcher is struggling) the dugout takes over calling the pitches, anyhow.
Hammock, much as I like him, doesn't have the physique to last as a catcher (obviously, since knees and shoulder already went bad) and wasn't nearly as good a prospect as Snyder. Brito is a perennial back-up at best.

If you want to stop the revolving door on catchers, this is the guy to do it with. Let's show a little patience with him. Or would you rather have Stinnett and Brent Mayne?
