Did anyone expect this team to make it this far?
The D'backs had a great season, overachieving with a bunch of young players, a mediocre starting rotation (behind Webb) and a solid bullpen.
And a great playoff sweep vs. the Cubs.
And now the question will be . . . are we going to move to the next step next season or, like the Suns, put on an entertaining show each year and have our shortcomings show in the 2nd season?
Unfortunately, hinging our development on Bob Melvin running the team and Eric Byrnes leading the team is not a strong point.
Eric Byrnes is no Luis Gonzales. Luis led with maturity and fun. Byrnes, with immaturity and showboating.
Byrnes seems to have inhereted the Steve Finley syndrome -- swing for the fences every pitch, then look straight up to see how high his popup travelled.
