You don't understand marketing very well. Nicknames can become a brand name for a person (See Ocho Cinco, ect..). McDonalds outsells everyone despite having an inferior product because people buy into the name.
It becomes even more important when your name isn't anything special. Anyone remember Rod Smart? Okay how about He Hate Me? Same guy. I had to actually google his real name.
And it isn't just crappy players. Can you name "Magic" Johnson's first name off the top of your head? But if I say "Magic" Johnson, you know exactly whom I mean.
