All the Zane Gonzales love cracks me up. He was so bad he got dumped already.

The Cards are now in a similar position with kicker as they are with QB --

time to find a young one that can kick in the NFL. I mention Gonzales only because he was drafted, and that suggests talent.

maybe he stinks, but if he does you can move on and try the next young kicker on your list....

Cardinals should give YoungHoe a chance, I feel like he deserves another opportunity.

I don't remember him getting a question about Dawson in today's presser.

Did he get a direct question about Dawson after the game?

We can come up with a gazillion ways to justify Dawson's poor play (i.e. stress of close games wind currents, just part of the game etc etc).

But the bottem line is that he'll break your heart at least 2 or 3 times during a season. It's unlikely that there's anyone else out there equally or more reliable.

Best we can do is factor in his miss-potential whenever we integrate the options of kicking or "going for it" into our play calling.

Dawson kicks are terribile even in the extra points, the ball doesnt go straight but always tend to go right
Not strenght not accuracy, dont see any reason to give him a paycheck

I said in several posts, that we should have kept McCrane... Almost everyone here said, Dawson was a known commodity, and you can't trust a rookie kicker.

That rookie kicker had a game winning kick for the Raiders... and continues to kick the ball through the back of the endzone...
Now that we know it's a lost season, yeah looking back they probably should've kept the rookie. But I watched him kick for the Raiders & he was far from impressive. Only 3 of 8 kickoffs we touchbacks - the rest were at the goal line or as short as the 8 yard line. (Perhaps he was coached to kick it there.) He was 3/5 on FGs... yep, he made the game winner from 29, but he could've put the game out of reach of ever getting to OT had he made one of the other two kicks. Meh.

He has a game winner this season... Dawson doesn't.

So yeah... Meh.

I'm willing to bet he was coached to not kick touchbacks, because Gruden had faith in ST's... He boomed em in pre-season.... At the end of the day, No one in their right mind would have thought a kicker would be the difference in this team making the playoffs or not... So why not keep a promising rookie on the cheap, instead of a more expensive dinosaur?

that is beyond defeatist mentality.

he hasn't been even good for two seasons. It's just as likely that you can find someone who can at least boom kickoffs and break our heart 2 or 3 times a season. At least then we'd gain SOMETHING on kickoffs and people wouldn't immediately be clutching their pearls when Dawson stepped on the field.

believing it wasn't a lost season before the season started was pretty naive, IMO. And even if so, if you thought we did have a fighting chance... I still question why you bring back the kicker who was bad last year and struggles on kickoffs. And who admitted to having a psychological thing going on last year?

but even if you argue that there was no way to know this was going to be a lost season, now that we all KNOW it's a lost season, wouldn't now be the best time to cut him loose and see if you can find someone to trust in live games for the future?

Winning teams don't put up with a lack of execution.

Rams cut Ficken and sign Santos

The Rams signed Ficken earlier this month after Zuerlein suffered a groin injury in Week 2. In two games, the 25-year-old Ficken missed two of three field-goal attempts, including one in Thursday night's win that kept the Minnesota Vikings within striking distance.

Exactly!! The excuse there is no one else out there is a poor one. No one else to do what? Miss 2 of three kicks and cost us yet another game? Where is this veteran reliability that Wilks seems to relish? I'd literally peruse the top 25 in college football and take a chance on any one of their kickers than to keep pausing the game to do a shot of whiskey before Dawson lines up.

But since you knew it was a lost season, what's the point of cutting him and having his dead money on the cap, just to try to make a few more meaningless kicks and possibly win a few meaningless games?? You can't have it both ways!

An awful kicker/punter who doesnt deserve a roster spot but misteriously keep his job safe meanwhile sucking

A team can't go into a season with the mindset that's it's a lost season, for obvious reasons... attracting coaches & veteran players, getting fans to buy tickets, etc.

And yeah, Dawson was ranked 23rd in FG% last year at 80%... below average for sure. The team could've eaten his $1M dead money and brought in, oh i dunno, Cairo Santos - who was ALSO an 80% kicker last year in his FIVE attempts. Yep, he was out of the league most of the year because he has a chronic groin injury (ugh!). And there are those gnashing their teeth over letting Catanzaro go. He was 20th and made 83% of his FGs last year. Whoopee! Or i'm sure there was another veteran who might've been a little better. But what difference, really, does it make?

Maybe McCrain will turn out to be a great NFL kicker for years and the Cardinals should've hung onto him... but his 60% success rate in the Raiders game isn't enough to make me pull my hair out, and there will be plenty more just like him next year.

but even if you argue that there was no way to know this was going to be a lost season, now that we all KNOW it's a lost season, wouldn't now be the best time to cut him loose and see if you can find someone to trust in live games for the future?
Now that we all know it's a lost season, what would be the point of cutting him loose?

There will be plenty more veteran kickers available, and plenty more to bring in for tryouts in the off season.

Sure it sucked to see him miss a 45-yard (corrected!) potential game winner last week, but in the grand scheme of things... whatever!
