What started out as a pre-draft report from Adam Schefter quickly turned into a nightmare for Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft.
The son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders and a heralded signal-caller in his own right – one who set more than 100 school records in his two seasons in Boulder – Shedeur Sanders was projected as one of the top picks of this draft, including one of the top players at that most important of positions.
Several teams were in position to draft a quarterback in the first round, including the New York Giants at No. 3, New Orleans Saints at No. 9 and Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 21. The Giants also traded back into the first round to select another player with the 25th overall pick. But the quarterback selected wasn't Sanders, but Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart.
Here's what to know of Sanders' NFL draft wait:
REQUIRED READING: Why did Shedeur Sanders' NFL draft stock drop? Why Colorado QB fell in 1st round
No, Sanders was not drafted in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. None of the teams in need of a quarterback selected him, with the Giants and Saints instead selecting Penn State edge defender Abdul Carter and Texas offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr., respectively.
Following those two picks, the next-most projected landing spot for Sanders was with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the No. 21 overall pick. But the franchise instead drafted Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, leaving no obvious choice for Sanders to get drafted in the first round.
Even when the Giants traded back into the first round, they selected Dart – not Sanders – with the 25th overall pick.
Sanders was wildly prolific at Colorado, completing 71.8% of his passes for more than 7,300 yards and 64 touchdowns to just 13 interceptions. His productivity, coupled with his status as the son of Deion Sanders, led many to believe he would be a high draft pick.
While that may still be true, it will almost certainly come on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL draft.
