They are just different forms of decoding. However, I have no clue if your asking about a receiver or DVD player? You have to have a receiver that outputs one of those formats or can at least pass it through to take advantage. So if your talking about your DVD player but don't have a receiver then you don't have much of a choice.

If your talking receiver....which one you use depends entirely on your speaker set up. For instance how many speakers to you have?

The standard for surround sound right now is Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1. That is the most common use if you have 5 speakers and sub. Don't use Dolby 2.0 unless you only have 2 speakers. The 5.1 would be used if you have (Left Front, Center, Right Front, Left Back, Right Back, Subwoofer). The subwoofer is the .1.

Now if you have a newer setup with 7 speakers then that opens even newer forms of decoding.

Thats partly what I was confused about.

Have 5.1 setup right now and you just answered 1 question. Don't use Dolby 2.0, now I see the code, I was thinking it was the next version.

I will be getting a 7.1 setup and I've been hearing about a bunch of new protocols which has even further confused me.

No need to get confused. If there are any movies that use 7.1, (most don't, not even HDDVD/Bluray) the sound will be matrixed in to 5.1 systems using most receivers on the market. I need to get a nicer set of fronts, and move my current fronts to the surround back to I can have 7.1 sound, but it isn't a necessity for me yet. Another year perhaps.

I agree with dream. It's not necessary but it is nice. I have 7.1 but only some newer High Def (HD DVD/Blu Ray) takes advantage. My receiver does "upconvert" to 7.1 other sound sources but it's not "true" 7.1.

Again, it's a "nice" to have but standard or necessary right now.
