i want sunday ticket for the season and i'm a new customer. problem is, i don't want to sign up for an entire year of programming because i prefer regular digital cable after the season ends. is there anyway "around" this? a new father can't go the bar every sunday anymore...

don't know

I don't know if there is any way around that or not, but now that I do have Direct TV with Tivo (the Tivo service is $5 a month!) I would not go back to digital cable again.

Friends don't let friends choose cable over Directv. I guarantee you will not regret switching to Directv.

I do not believe it is possible either. My sis and I looked into this since we are in the Philly market and Comcast cable is the ONLY place you can see the Phillies, Sixers and Flyers. We figured Direct TV in the fall, cable the rest of the time. Not possible, so we pay for both.

I long for the day when I can get rid of cable. Stupid Comcast bastards. Listen to the others. You will LOVE Direct TV!

a friend suggested that if i don't give my ss # and pay for all of the package up front - that they can't report it to credit agencies when you don't pay anymore after the season ends. said he's done it 6 years in a row and there is nothing on his credit report. plus, he says it takes them about 6 weeks to cut the signal after the super bowl. is this scandlous or what? hmmmm....

Just got DirecTV hooked up yesterday with NFL Ticket! Can't wait for the season. Hoping to catch some Cards games in HD this year.

Yeah SWD1974. You can get a Samsung 35 hour box for 100 bucks at Circuit City. It doubles as your direct TV box and the Tivo box. If you run a second line from your Dish you can watch one show and record another at the same time.

Sign the contract and don't look back. You won't regret it.

BTW, I'm going to try to make it out to the Old Hole once or twice this year. From one new dad to another, I'm going nuts being cooped up all the time!

I know they are running a "special" for those idiots who had the Ticket last year and refused to get TiVO, even when people smarter than them told them to. (Yea, I know, I should have gotten it!) I think it's $79 for the box. The deal is good til the end of August.

I'd call Direct TV and see what they can do for you since you are a new subscriber.

TiVO QUESTION: So, can I just plug the TiVO box in where the Direct TV box used to be? If so, any chance I can use the "old" box elsewhere in the house undetected?

Yes

Yes, you have to buy the Tivo converted box. I got ours on sale for $99 with free installation.. but it has a smaller memory than I would have liked, and probably should have spent the extra $100 or so for the larger memory.

Jersey Girl, unless you have full blown subscription (about $85 a month), you will have to pay an additional $5 a month, but you can then have as many extra boxes as you want at no additional charge (I actually have 6). The same holds true for Tivo boxes.

Call Direct Tv, and tell them you just want to purchase the NFL Sunday Ticket.
I have been doing it for the last 4 years. I have dig. cable, and no other DTV programing. Plus...they give you the NFL Channel free with it

I think you can get DirecTV without the contract but you will pay more for the equipment. There are some great deals for the box and dish but usually only if you sign up. I think you can buy the box retail then call DirecTV for the services you want.

You may find out signing up for the basic service for a year and getting the discount is cheaper. You should figure out if you want HD or recording capabilities and shop for the STBs (set top boxes) and the specials.

I have seen some good deals before on american satellite

A froogle or pricegrabber search on the various STB models will get you some prices on them.

E-bay might be a good place to find a box as well.

Direct TV blows digital cable right out of the water. You need to be a permanent convert from the dark side!

If you don't get the Direct TV/Tivo combo box, but just a regular Tivo box, the tivo service is 12.95 or something.

Anyway, direct TV + tivo is so superior to just having regular cable it's not even funny, AND it is about as expense as cable too.

And here is the coup de gras,

IF you have a DUEL TUNER on your direct TV dish (which I think is pretty standard, it certainly wasn't hard for us to get the duel tuner) you can record two live programs, while watching something that you've already recorded, or, like Heavy, said, you can record something live, and watch something else live at the same time.

not to mention how cool watching live or recorded shows using the tivo computer system is.

in another room, we've got just the Direct TV box, no Tivo. Watching live tv without tivo is a joke. I can hardly stand it.

When I watch a cards game, I use the DVR to quickly replay a play over and over again so I can watch the performance of each member of the line or linebackers or whatever. A digital video recorded compared to a regular VCR is like a 2004 Lexus compared to a 1939 hudson.

I can do the same thing on my cable box and I don't have to pay for the TiVo service.

Which is better, cable or satellite, depends on the individuals prefrences and what cable systems they have available.

Of course DirecTV has the ace in the hole with Sunday Ticket.

The NFL needs to stop it's exclusive contract for sunday ticket with DirecTV.

DirecTV is a company that has used it's financial muscle to attempt to extort billions of dollars out of a hundereds of thousands of people through extortion letters and by filing over 25,000 lawsuits against those who wouldn't bend over and pay them off.

Further, three of DirecTV's former investigators have made depositions to the effect that DirecTV is operating a huge extortion ring under color of law. DirecTV has attempted to extort money from the blind, the dead and for objects that could not possibly be used to to steal satellite like leather pouches, ac adapters and sega dreamcast mod chips.

I'll go watch sunday ticket on a local taverns dime cause I sure as hell am not going to give any money for DirecTV satellite television.

Unless you sign a guaranteed contract to get free equipment and /or install, you can manage your account on a daily basis. I have had DirecTv for 4 years and turn it on or off and change services whenever I want.

Buy a system on the open market. Install it and go online to set up your account. NFL ticket can be paid for up front or in 4 monthly payments. Once the season is over turn the service off or keep it. No biggie.
