Dirk Nowitzki and Mark Cuban were simultaneously known as the faces of Dallas Mavericks basketball for over two decades.
Nowtizki was one of the game's best players. He eventually led the Mavericks to a championship in 2011 and cemented himself as one of the greatest power forwards ever. He's undoubtedly the best player in the history of the Mavericks' franchise.
Cuban was the most vocal and visible owner in basketball since buying the team in 2000. He wasn't the typical owner who just made the purchase and hung out in the background. He was in on team decisions in every way and was front-facing about it. People still think Cuban when they think of the Mavs despite him selling his majority stake in the team.
Now, it seems, they're both estranged from the organization.
WHAT DOES HE DO NOW?: Mark Cuban's role for the Mavericks is largely up for debate these days.
ESPN's Tim McMahon said that Nowitzki has cut ties with the franchise following the fallout from the Luka Dončić deal.
Both he and Mark Cuban have become staunch critics of the organization.
This doesn't come as a total surprise. Both were huge fans of Dončić. Cuban once said that he'd divorce his wife before trading Dončić away. He's been openly critical about the trade, saying he wouldn't have done it if he were still in charge.
Nowitzki, specifically, said he was "disappointed and sad" because of the trade. He traveled to LA to cheer on Dončić during his Lakers' debut.
Nico Harrison should write the playbook for becoming public enemy No. 1. Under Harrison, the Mavericks have somehow alienated the fans in Dallas and the most iconic figure in the team's history. That'd be impressive if it weren't so sad to see.
As a franchise, that's certainly not a space you want to be in. Harrison doesn't seem to care too much, though. According to him, his only obligation is to the Dallas Mavericks — not Dirk or the fans.
That's an interesting way to run a team.

ESPN’s Tim McMahon:
“Dirk is completely turned off by this franchise. I’ll have more on that situation coming out once they’re eliminated, probably Thursday morning.”

Nico: "My obligation is to the Dallas Mavericks, it's what's the best interest of the Dallas Mavericks, and that's the most important thing. Some of those decisions are going to be unpopular maybe to Dirk and maybe to the fans, but my obligation is to the Dallas Mavericks."
