HBO's Real Sports did a story on this issue as well not long ago....the NFL simply prints money at will, yet continues to largely turn a blind eye to retired players....hopefully this changes for the better sometime soon....

Ditka, DeLamielleure introduce DeMarco in fight to take care of ex-players
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

Pro football Hall of Famers Mike Ditka and Joe DeLamielleure introduced former Jaguars and Bengals offensive lineman Brian DeMarco on Monday as an example of the NFL players association's failure to guarantee the medical care of its former players.

In doing so, Ditka and DeLamielleure continued their battle with union boss Gene Upshaw and put a face to their campaign. The Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund has been established to provide medical relief for former players. Ditka, who is an analyst for ESPN, is on the organization's board of directors.

DeMarco, 35, said he and his family have been homeless three times since he retired in 2000 with back and elbow injuries, and he needed a cane to walk to the podium on Monday.

"My right leg is completely numb. I have extreme nerve pain in my arms," DeMarco said, according to The Chicago Tribune. "I have lost my grip ... my ability to hold my kids."

DeMarco said he exhausted his savings paying for medical expenses. He said he hasn't been given the opportunity to visit league doctors and hasn't received any response from the union in his requests for help.

"I am not the only one," he said, according to the Tribune. "Whether you played in the NFL or not, poverty is poverty."

"All we're saying is do the right thing," Ditka said in an interview with ESPN.

"I would like to see a fund established that would take care of retired football players ... that won't make them jump through hoops when they need medical assistance."

DeLamielleure again responded to Upshaw's comments about him and his criticism of his support for Gridiron Greats that appeared in the Philadelphia Daily News.

"He threatened to break my neck," DeLamielleure said, according to the Tribune. "I say that he stunk as a union leader for 20 years. Screw Upshaw. He stuck it to us for 20-some years.

I was watching ESPN the other day and Chris Mortenson was insistent that it's the lenghty paperwork process and "red tape" that's causing the biggest issue for players getting their benefits.

Sounds like it's got something in common with the V.A. system.

So Upshaw is looking for a big pat on the back for the "system" he has in place which doled out under $10K to a family bordering on homelessness??? In the words of Derrick Coleman, "Whoop De Damn Do"....

Thats only a portion of what they were willing to show in the form of cleared checks.

They have also been paying his rent since March.

He will make 100K this year in pension monies(which he gets no questions asked the day he retires, its in the NFLPA CBA with the owners, Mike Ditka is getting 88K a year by the way), and is recieving full rent assistance.

His issue is with medical insurance and getting the league doctors to except his claim so he could get more money added to is pension.

By the way when it comes to accepting a claim or not it has to be unanomoius decision by a group that is made up by 3 Owners, and 3 players reps which includes Mr. B, and Tom Condon.

I am not saying the players are wrong, just that there are much better players to hang their hats on who are truthfull on just how bad they are getting shafted.

The biggest problems are the guys who played in the 60s-80s. They have jack squat for pensions and insurance. Mercury Morris would've been a better person to put in front of the camera. I heard him on the radio last year, and he was very compelling.

Ditka still looks like he could kick some arse.

Ditka for President 2008...I am thinking the 'radicals' would think (presuming they are allowed) twice before messing with Ditka...

Upshaw should be fired for threatening to break Delamielleure's neck.

Oh, amen brother, amen! I got a letter in the mail about a week ago telling me I have an appointment, giving less than 2 weeks notice. I have to call and change the appointment, and I'm supposed to call records to update a few things. I sit on hold for 45 minutes with no concept of when my call will be answered, so I hang up and call records. Of course they can't do anything but say they'll call scheduling and lodge a complaint. Meanwhile, if I don't make the appointment, they'll get mad and chide me for missing an appointment and not giving notice WHEN I CAN'T GIVE NOTICE.

Yeah, the VA system? The Gordian knot had NOTHING on it.

The system does need to be changed. How likely is it that you get 6 people to come to unanimous decision on anything much less when dealing with millions of dollars.I know i'm probably being simplistic, but why not have a odd number of people, one being a medical person, and have a majority rule.
